The presence of phenols, such as nonylphenol (NP), bisphenol (BPA), and octylphenol (OP), in the environment have been receiving increased attention due to their potential risks to human health and environment. The use of reclaimed water for irrigation may be one of the sources of these phenols in the agricultural system. A field experiment was conducted to assess the effects of reclaimed water irrigation on phenol contamination of agricultural topsoil and products in the North China Plain between 2015 and 2016. Three irrigation treatments were applied to all crops: reclaimed water irrigation, groundwater irrigation and alternative irrigation with reclaimed water and groundwater (1:1, v/v). The results showed that the concentrations of NP, BPA, and OP in the topsoil were 0.02–0.54, 0.004–0.06, and ND–9.9 × 10⁻³ mg/kg, respectively; the corresponding values in agricultural products were 0.007–0.70, 0.004–0.24, and ND–1.08 mg/kg, respectively. The concentration of NP in the topsoil and agricultural products and that of BPA in the agricultural products were all less than the recommended limits. The yields of wheat, maize, vegetables were 4.35–7.08, 1.03–6.46, and 10.9–67.0 t/ha, respectively. The bioaccumulation factors (BCFs) of OP, NP, and BPA for cereals were 0.7–4.77, 0.16–4.59, and 1.3–23.9, respectively; the corresponding values in vegetables were 0.0–4.53 (except cucumber and eggplant), 0.38–12.6, and 0.57–24.3, respectively. No significant differences in phenol concentrations, BCFs, or yields of wheat and vegetables were observed among the three irrigation treatments. In conclusion, compared with groundwater irrigation, reclaimed water irrigation in this experiment did not significantly affect phenol concentrations in the topsoil and agricultural products as well as BCFs and yields of wheat and vegetables. However, because the quality of reclaimed water may vary across collected areas, additional experiments are warranted to analyze the effects of reclaimed water irrigation on the risk of phenol contamination.

In order to study the co-existing environment of pests and economic animals, the toxicity of 15 insecticides to Plutella xylostella, Monopterus albus, and Paramisgurnus dabryanus was tested. Combined with the recommended maximum doses in the field and bioassay, the results showed that for the three insecticides that were of relatively low toxicity to M. albus and P. dabryanus, spinetoram showed the best control effect on P. xylostella, followed by chlorfenapyr and chlorantraniliprole. However, P. xylostella showed a relatively high resistance to chlorfenapyr. Therefore, the best insecticide suitable for the fields with the cauliflower-finless eel or cauliflower-loach planting and rearing combination was spinetoram, followed by chlorantraniliprole and chlorfenapyr. Other insecticides such as emamectin benzoate, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), matrine, and so on were effective against the diamondback moth, but they were not suitable for use because of their high toxicity to the finless eel and loach.

Knowledge of the concentration of the bioavailable forms of mercury in the soil is necessary, especially, if these soils contain above-limit total mercury concentrations. The bioavailability of mercury in soil samples collected from the vicinity of abandoned cinnabar mines was evaluated using diffusive gradients in the thin films technique (DGT) and mercury phytoaccumulation by vegetables (lettuce, spinach, radish, beetroot, carrot, and green peas). Mercury was accumulated primarily in roots of vegetables. The phytoaccumulation of mercury into edible plant parts was site-specific as well as vegetable species-specific. The mercury concentration in edible parts decreased in the order: spinach leaf ≥ lettuce leaf ≥ carrot storage root ≥ beetroot storage root > radish storage root > pea legume. The translocation index as well as the target hazard quotient indicate the possible usability of soils from the vicinity of abandoned cinnabar mines for planting pod vegetables (peas). A strong positive correlation (r = 0.75 to 0.92, n > 30, p < 0.05) was observed between mercury concentration in secondary roots, the storage roots, leaves of vegetables and the flux of mercury from soil to the DGT units, and the effective concentration of mercury in soil solutions.

Rising of temperature in conjunction with acidification due to the anthropogenic climates has tremendously affected all aquatic life. Small changes in the surrounding environment could lead to physiological constraint in the individual. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the effects of warm water temperature (32 °C) and low pH (pH 6) on physiological responses and growth of hybrid grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus ♀ × Epinephelus lanceolatus ♂) juveniles for 25 days. Growth performance was significantly affected under warm water temperature and low-pH conditions. Surprisingly, the positive effect on growth was observed under the interactive effects of warm water and low pH exposure. Hybrid grouper exposed to the interactive stressor of warm temperature and low pH exhibited higher living cost, where HSI content was greatly depleted to about 2.3-folds than in normal circumstances. Overall, challenge to warm temperature and low pH induced protein mobilization as an energy source followed by glycogen and lipid to support basal metabolic needs.

Emerging per-/polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), such as chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonates (Cl-PFESAs), have been detected in human samples, yet investigation on their occurrence in pregnant women remains limited. Herein, ten legacy PFASs, branched perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), two Cl-PFESAs, perfluoro-2-propoxypropanoic acid (HFPO-DA), and ammonium 4,8-dioxa-3H-perfluorononanoate (ADONA) were detected in serum samples from 480 pregnant women in Tianjin, China. The influencing effects of age, body mass index, gravidity, and parity were also evaluated. PFOS [geographic mean (GM): 7.05 ng/mL], 6:2Cl-PFESA (GM: 5.31 ng/mL), and PFOA (GM: 2.82 ng/mL) were the dominant PFASs in the serum of pregnant women, while neither HFPO-DA nor ADONA was detectable in any serum. The serum concentration of Cl-PFESAs and 6:2Cl-PFESA/PFOS ratio in the present study were 2–5 times higher than that in previous studies of pregnant women in China. Serum concentrations of Cl-PFESAs were significantly correlated with all detected PFAAs (Spearman’s Rho: 0.15–0.69, p < 0.01) excepting perfluoropentanesulfonate (PFPeS), indicating common exposure sources for Cl-PFESAs and PFAAs and some particular exposure source for PFPeS. Younger age and multi-parity were associated with lower serum concentrations of PFOS and several perfluoroalkyl sulfonates but not associated with Cl-PFESAs or PFOA, suggesting an increasing exposure to Cl-PFESAs and PFOA which neutralized the impact of age and parity. Overall, this study indicated a relatively high exposure level and composition of 6:2Cl-PFESA in pregnant women in the north coast of China, which highlights the need to investigate the exposure sources in this area.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have gradually become a global health hazard in recent decades. Gut microbiota (GM) provides a crucial interface between the environment and the human body. A triad relationship may exist between EDCs exposure, host phenotypic background, and GM effects. In this review, we attempted to parse out the contribution of GM on the alteration of host phenotypic responses induced by EDCs, suggesting that GM intervention may be used as a therapeutic strategy to limit the expansion of pathogen. These studies can increase the understanding of pathogenic mechanisms, and help to identify the modifiable environmental factors and microbiota characteristics in people with underlying disease susceptibility for prevention and remediation.

Pyrogenic char (biochar) with a high sorption capacity (B-HSC) can sequester hazardous chemicals (e.g., phenanthrene). However, when sorption inhibits bioavailability of some functional chemicals (e.g., the herbicidal efficacy of diuron in soil), biochar with a low sorption capacity (B-LSC) is required to prevent sorption effects. The pyrolytic B-HSC generation has been reported, but information on B-LSC formation is scarce. How fast B-HSC and B-LSC could be generated is unknown until now. Here, biochars were rapidly prepared (the shortest heating time reached 5 min and the cooling time reached < 30 min) by a direct-pyrolysis method by directly exposing packaged rice straw and pine wood to 350 °C, 500 °C and 700 °C and out-of-furnace cooling at room temperature. The sorption of diuron, phenanthrene, and twelve other chemicals was investigated. B–HSCs were obtained within 30 min of rice straw pyrolysis, and the biochar Kd values quickly increased to 7-730-fold that of the raw biomass as –OH and C–O–C in (hemi)cellulose of rice straw rapidly degraded, increasing hydrophobic interactions between the char and chemicals (solubility ≤ 82.8 g/L). In contrast, B-LSCs were generated within 30 min of PW pyrolysis, and the Kd values of the biochars were 0.2–3.0-fold that of the raw biomass, as the surface area development and hydrophobicity-driven sorption were probably delayed by the late degradation of lignin aromatic C–O and phenolic –OH. Biochar amendment revealed an enhancement effect of B-HSC but not of B-LSC on soil sorption. The fast formation of B-LSC and B-HSC provides a guide to develop time- and cost-effective technique in pyrolytically producing weakly or strongly sorbing biochars for organic chemical management.

Organotin compounds are highly toxic environmental pollutants with neurotoxic and endocrine-disrupting effects. They are potent inhibitors of glutathione transferases (GSTs), thus impeding their detoxication and antioxidant functions. Several GSTs, including equine GST A3-3 (EcaGST A3-3), exhibit steroid double-bond isomerase activity and are involved in the biosynthesis of testosterone and progesterone. We have performed enzyme kinetics analyses of the inhibition of EcaGST A3-3 by organotin compounds. We have also solved crystal structures of EcaGST A3-3 in complexes with glutathione, and with glutathione together with covalently bound triethyltin. Our structural data indicate that the tin atom forms strong bonds with a covalent character not only with the glutathione, but also with a tyrosyl residue of the enzyme itself, thereby preventing the release of the glutathione-organotin adduct and completely blocking the enzyme function. This work presents a structural basis for the general mechanism of GST inhibition by organotin compounds and contributes to the understanding of their neurotoxic and endocrine disrupting effects.

Atmospheric aerosols play a crucial role in climate change, especially in the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau. Here, we present the seasonal and diurnal characteristics of aerosol vertical profiles measured using a Mie lidar, along with surface black carbon (BC) measurements, at Mt. Qomolangma (QOMS), in the central Himalayas, in 2018–2019. Lidar-retrieved profiles of aerosols showed a distinct seasonal pattern of aerosol loading (aerosol extinction coefficient, AEC), with a maximum in the pre-monsoon (19.8 ± 22.7 Mm⁻¹ of AEC) and minimum in the summer monsoon (7.0 ± 11.2 Mm⁻¹ of AEC) seasons. The diurnal variation characteristics of AEC and BC were quite different in the non-monsoon seasons with enriched aerosols being maintained from 00:00 to 10:00 in the pre-monsoon season. The major aerosol types at QOMS were identified as background, pollution, and dust aerosols, especially during the pre-monsoon season. The occurrence of pollution events influenced the vertical distribution, seasonal/diurnal patterns, and types of aerosols. Source contribution of BC based on the weather research and forecasting chemical model showed that approximately 64.2% ± 17.0% of BC at the QOMS originated from India and Nepal in South Asia during the non-monsoon seasons, whereas approximately 47.7% was from local emission sources in monsoon season. In particular, the high abundance of BC at the QOMS in the pre-monsoon season was attributed to biomass burning, whereas anthropogenic emissions were the likely sources during the other seasons. The maximum aerosol concentration appeared in the near-surface layer (approximately 4.3 km ASL), and high concentrations of transported aerosols were mainly found at 4.98, 4.58, 4.74, and 4.88 km ASL in the pre-monsoon, monsoon, post-monsoon, and winter seasons, respectively. The investigation of the vertical profiles of aerosols at the QOMS can help verify the representation of aerosols in the air quality model and satellite products and regulate the anthropogenic disturbance over the Tibetan Plateau.

Absorption is an eminent technology for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) elimination with the merits of high efficiency and low cost. Absorbent plays a critical role in the absorption process, and the thermal stability, saturation capacity, and regeneration performance should be concerned. As a kind of green and eco-friendly solvent, ionic liquid (IL) is expected to be a substitute for the conventional VOCs absorbent. In this study, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([Bmim][PF₆]) is employed to absorb the modeling VOCs (toluene and acetone). Moreover, the used [Bmim][PF₆] is recovered by thermal distillation and the reusability is then conducted by consecutive batch experiments. Based on that, the thermal stability of [Bmim][PF₆] is comprehensively examined, in which the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters are also calculated. Results reveal that [Bmim][PF₆] owned promising toluene absorption performance with inlet concentration of 3000 mg/m³ and flow rate of 300 mL/min at 20 °C, it possesses the saturated adsorption capacity of 5.16 mg/g. [Bmim][PF₆] also shows satisfying thermal stability up to 610 K. In addition, thermal distillation is proved to be a reliable regeneration route on account of the recovered [Bmim][PF₆] remained satisfying capacity even after five cycles.
