Biofilm Formation by the Hexavalent Chromium Removing Strain Streptococcus salivarius: in Vitro Approach on Abiotic Surfaces Full text

In this study, a strain of lactic acid bacteria Streptococcus salivarius was studied for its capacity to remove hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) from a liquid medium and to form biofilm. Both properties are useful for using the strain in bioremediation of metal-contaminated effluents. For biofilm formation capacity, three methods were used: the tube method (TM), the Congo red agar method (CRA) and adherence to polystyrene tissue culture plate method (TCP). S. salivarius, showed a positive-biofilm and a correlation between the three methods was noted. The bacterial surface hydrophobicity was studied using the microbial adhesion to solvents method (MATS). On AISI-316 L stainless steel, the strain with a hydrophobic surface showed a good adhesion on this support after 18 h incubation. The colonization of the supports and the biofilms formation by the bacterial cell was observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Cr(VI) on S. salivarius was determined on MRS broth, it was relatively high and equal to 400mg/l. In addition, it displayed a remarkable capacity to reduce Cr(VI) concentration on the liquid medium containing initially 50 mg/l of Cr(VI) ; the percent removal rate was equal to approximately 42% after 72 h of incubation at 37 °C. In addition to its GRAS status, the obtained results suggested that S. salivarius could be successfully used in Cr(VI) bioremediation.

Algal biorefinery process utilizes every component of algal biomass to produce multiple useful fuel products. In this technique, acid pretreatment of algal biomass hydrolyzes microalgal carbohydrates into fermentable sugars, makes lipids more extractable and a protein part accessible for additional products. In the present study, Chlorella sorkiniana produced higher quantity of biodiesel than Botryococcus braunii and biomass in Botryococcus braunii was higher than the Chlorella sorkiniana. Botryococcus braunii produces 11% more lipid content than Chlorella sorkiniana which was consistent with biomass content. The total sugar (oligomeric and monomeric) yield attained by Combined Algal Processing (CAP) was 89.9%. 29 g/L ethanol was produced during the fermentation in the Pretreated Algal Slurry. The recovery of lipids from CAP was reported as 84–89% after fermentation and ethanol removal. CAP preserves the PUFA (Poly-Unsaturated Fatty Acids) and utilizes these high-value PUFAs to further reduce the cost of biofuel production and replace petroleum products.

The purpose of this research is to quantify the potential of waste recycling in the form of participatory scenarios for separation from the source and to study the factors of minimization (reduction) of waste production in a district of Tehran. Amount of waste minimization was determined with considering a couple of citizens' participation scenarios. Source separation of valuable wastes including paper and cardboard, plastic, plastic bags, aluminum cans, bread, PET, waste metal and glass were considered in this procedure. Among 250 tons of generated dry waste within the district, 150 tons (60%) goes directly to landfill instead of getting recycled. Considering the successful experiences regarding the use of reverse vending machine (RVM) in recycling of beverage containers, this research takes RVM as a reasonable method to promote the recycling activities by citizens. In the 10% scenario, the participation for the separation of the total amount of daily materials is about 4,300 USD per day and in the 25% scenario, 10,800 USD of added value have been calculated. Also, for the participation of 10 and 25 percent during a month, 15 and 30 waste disposal services to the disposal and processing complex could get less.

Western Asia has recently become an arena for significant upheavals of various kinds, be it political, safety-related, geopolitical, social, etc. These have in turn focalized the salience of the region as well as its ensuing situation and challenges on a global perspective. Such a naturally-born phenomenon is characterized, amidst other factors, by its transregional quality, granting it some sort of geopolitical peculiarity. The occurrence of haze would implicate a merged endeavor on part of the countries, engaged in this cross-regional abnormality. This joint endeavor is, however, hindered and at times exacerbated due to certain political inconsistencies among the countries, undoubtedly rising from differences in ideology, religion, politics, and social standards. In this light, the present study seeks to inquire the impacts of haze, as a geopolitical phenomenon, on involved countries. It also tries to find out whether subsequent implications of this predicament could in effect be employed to establish new relations among rather-standoffish nations or if they are merely components of a cold relation among countries and could intensify each nation’s problems, reducing the overall quality of life further. The findings indicate that despite the existent domestic and transregional problems, public opinion tends to establish joint cooperation among the engaged countries. This is not in the least a result of fear of a low life quality among the inhabitants of the said nations.

Plastic debris is one of the major environmental concerns for the coastal area of Brunei Darussalam. It reduces the aesthetic appeals of the beaches in the country. The current study investigates marine debris on six different beaches of Brunei Darussalam along the South China Sea. Plastic was found the most abundant among whole debris by number (90.02%) and by weight (39.12%). It was classified by size (micro (<5 mm), meso (5-20 mm), macro (21-100), and mega (>100 mm)), colour (transparent, coloured, white and black). Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) was used to investigate the types of plastics and additives present in it. Statistical analysis using Minitab 17 and Kruskal-Wallis test was performed for comparison of data at different study sites. All major types of plastics were found in different forms with varying quantities from which toxic chemicals may leach out during degradation. The highest abundance by the number of plastic debris was found on Muara beach with a mean value 74.428 n/m2 ± 34.33 n/m2, while the lowest abundance was found on Lumut beach 53 n/m2 ± 20.9 n/m2. The study shows beaches used for recreational facilities are likely to have more debris as compared to other beaches.

This study aimed to evaluate the concentration of heavy metals in liquid effluents and to quantify the mercury content in dental amalgam waste generated by dental clinics. Three neighbouring cities in Northeast Algeria were considered in this study (Constantine, Skikda, and Annaba). Heavy metals, such as Hg, Cu, Zn, Fe, Ni, Mn, Cr, Cd, and Pb, were analysed in wastewater and then compared with acceptable standard values. Special attention was given to mercurybecause of its dangerous effects. The results collected indicated the presence of heavy metal contamination in dental wastewater. Heavy metal concentrations were significantly high for all heavy metals and exceeded the allowed concentrations. However, Pb and Cr were shown to have acceptable concentrations. This study highlights the possible contamination of the environment by mercury and heavy metals generated by dental clinics. This study also demonstrates an order of magnitude of the concentration of these heavy metal in a large agglomeration with a population of 2.5 million people.

In order to investigate the accumulation and bio-absorption of lead and cadmium in radish and cress, the present study has been conducted in a completely randomized design in three replicates in a hydroponic growing medium. The first factor includes the plant type at two levels (radish and cress), and the second factor is consisted of lead (Pb) (first experiment) at two levels (50 and 100 mg/L), cadmium (Cd) (second experiment) at one level (10 mg/L), and a combination of lead and cadmium (third experiment) again at two levels. After 23 days, roots and aerial parts of both plants have been dried for 48 hours at 70°C in an oven. Then, half gram (0.5 g) of the dried templates has been used to measure the accumulation of Pb and Cd by means of an atomic absorption spectrometer. The highest amount of Pb in radish and crest roots belong to 100 mg/L concentration and the combined Cd (10) + Pb (100) mg/L treatment, respectively, and the highest amount of Cd occurs in Cd (10) + Pb (50) for radish roots and in Cd (10) + Pb (100) combination for cress. Moreover, the Translocation Factor (TF), with a value below 1 and higher bio-concentration factor (BCF) in roots, compared to the aerial part of both radish and cress, seem to be due to the low capability of these plants to transfer Pb and Cd from roots to aerial part. There is a high potentiality for lead accumulation in the roots that prevent its transfer to the aerial part.

Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPHs) are one of the most dangerousorganic contaminants in the environment. Therefore, the remediation of the oilcontaminatedsoil is necessary. The growth of barley and oat plant was studied in thecontaminated soils (4, 6, 8% TPHs) during 5 months. Plant height, wet and dry weight ofshoots and roots of both plants were measured. Results showed that oat and barley height,wet and dry weight of shoots and roots decreased with increasing contamination levels.Regardless of the plants species, the highest rate of TPH reduction was observed in soilwith 4% contamination and decreased with increasing the contamination level. The TPHsconcentration in the rhizosphere of barley and oat decreased by 29.66 and 24.04% at the6% TPHs level and by 21.24 and 17.48% at the 8% TPHs level, respectively. Cultivationof barley and oat plants significantly accelerated the biodegradation of hydrocarbons andreduced TPHs content in soil as compared to unplanted soil.

The life cycle of diesel fuel in non-passenger vehicles was assessed for all registered vehicles in Qatar as of November 2017. The Greenhouse gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy use in Transportation (GREET) model was used as a source of normalized data to evaluate diesel fuel emissions for all non-passenger vehicle categories. This work aims at estimating the emissions from all non-passenger diesel vehicles in Qatar and evaluating the impact of the fuel life cycle assessment. The emissions of CO2, NOx, CO, SO2, VOC, black carbon (BC), organic carbon, fine particulates PM2.5, and coarse particulates PM10 were evaluated. SO2 emissions were found to be dominant during the well to pump (WTP) stage of the life cycle assessment (LCA) process, while the pump to wheel (PTW) stage was found to be dominated by CO, VOC, PM10, PM2.5, and BC emissions. NOx and organic carbon emissions were virtually the same during both stages. Total greenhouse gas emissions amounted to 5367 kt of CO2 equivalent (CO2-eq) in 2017 as compared with that in 2014 (5277 kt), the only reported value in Qatar for transportation emissions. In addition, several mitigation strategies are proposed to ensure sustainability in the transport sector and to minimize the negative impact of diesel fuel emissions in the country.

The aim of this study was to determine the levels of Cd, As, Hg, Pb, and Cr in the edible part of eleven most consumed fish species collected from the north-east coast of Persian Gulf, Iran, during 2017. An inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) instrument was used to measure the concentration of heavy metals. The results were compared within acceptable limits for human consumption set by various health institutions. The order of heavy metals about total accumulation was Cr>As>Pb> Cd> Hg. The mean heavy metals concentrations of fish species muscle decreased in the order of Acanthopagrus latus> Planiliza subviridis> Lutjanus lemniscatus > Alectis indica> Epinephelus areolatus> Otolithes ruber> Epinephelus chlorostigma> Lethrinus crocineus> Euryglossa orientalis > Cynoglossus arel > Grammoplites suppositus. Probably the difference in the concentration of metals between samples depends on fish species, diet, and habitat. These species were declared to exhibit a low probability of causing non-cancerous diseases. The comparison of the accumulation and hazard risk of consuming the five heavy metals existing in the eleven species that were sampled from the coasts of Khuzestan, Maah-shar Harbour, with the WHO and USEPA guidelines showed that although consuming these fish species does not threaten the consumers' health, pregnant women and children should be cautious about consuming them. The HI was calculated for 70 kg body weight of adults and 14.5 kg body weight of children. The amount of optimal consumption is different for different weights of consumers.
