Studies of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and its metabolites in PM10, soils, rat livers and cattle urine in Kumasi, Ghana, revealed high concentrations and cancer potency. In addition, WHO and IARC have reported an increase in cancer incidence and respiratory diseases in Ghana. Human urine were therefore collected from urban and control sites to: assess the health effects associated with PAHs exposure using malondialdehyde (MDA) and 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG); identify any association between OH-PAHs, MDA, 8-OHdG with age and sex; and determine the relationship between PAHs exposure and occurrence of respiratory diseases. From the results, urinary concentrations of the sum of OH-PAHs (∑OHPAHs) were significantly higher from urban sites compared to the control site. Geometric mean concentrations adjusted by specific gravity, GMSG, indicated 2-OHNaphthalene (2-OHNap) (6.01 ± 4.21 ng/mL) as the most abundant OH-PAH, and exposure could be through the use of naphthalene-containing-mothballs in drinking water purification, insect repellent, freshener in clothes and/or “treatment of various ailments”. The study revealed that exposure to naphthalene significantly increases the occurrence of persistent cough (OR = 2.68, CI: 1.43–5.05), persistent headache (OR = 1.82, CI: 1.02–3.26), tachycardia (OR = 3.36, CI: 1.39–8.10) and dyspnea (OR = 3.07, CI: 1.27–7.43) in Kumasi residents. Highest level of urinary 2-OHNap (224 ng/mL) was detected in a female, who reported symptoms of persistent cough, headache, tachycardia, nasal congestion and inflammation, all of which are symptoms of naphthalene exposure according to USEPA. The ∑OHPAHs, 2-OHNap, 2-3-OHFluorenes, and -OHPhenanthrenes showed a significantly positive correlation with MDA and 4-OHPhenanthrene with 8-OHdG, indicating possible lipid peroxidation/cell damage or degenerative disease in some participants. MDA and 8-OHdG were highest in age group 21–60. The present study showed a significant sex difference with higher levels of urinary OH-PAHs in females than males.

To gain a better understanding of the impacts from potential risk sources, we developed an oil spill model using probabilistic method, which simulates numerous oil spill trajectories under varying environmental conditions. The statistical results were quantified from hypothetical oil spills under multiple scenarios, including area affected probability, mean oil slick thickness, and duration of water surface exposed to floating oil. The three sub-indices together with marine area vulnerability are merged to compute the composite index, characterizing the spatial distribution of risk degree. Integral of the index can be used to identify the overall risk from an emission source. The developed model has been successfully applied in comparison to and selection of an appropriate oil port construction location adjacent to a marine protected area for Phoca largha in China. The results highlight the importance of selection of candidates before project construction, since that risk estimation from two adjacent potential sources may turn out to be significantly different regarding hydrodynamic conditions and eco-environmental sensitivity.

The bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is an upper trophic level predator and the most common cetacean species found in nearshore waters of southern Florida, including the Lower Florida Keys (LFK) and the Florida Coastal Everglades (FCE). The objective of this study was to assess contamination levels of total mercury (T-Hg) in skin and persistent organic pollutants (PCBs, PBDEs, DDXs, HCHs, HCB, Σ PCDD/Fs and Σ DL-PCBs) in blubber samples of bottlenose dolphins from LFK (n = 27) and FCE (n = 24). PCBs were the major class of compounds found in bottlenose dolphin blubber and were higher in individuals from LFK (Σ 6 PCBs LFK males: 13,421 ± 7730 ng g⁻¹ lipids, Σ 6 PCBs LFK females: 9683 ± 19,007 ng g⁻¹ lipids) than from FCE (Σ 6 PCBs FCE males: 5638 ng g⁻¹ ± 3627 lipids, Σ 6 PCBs FCE females: 1427 ± 908 ng g⁻¹ lipids). These levels were lower than previously published data from the southeastern USA. The Σ DL-PCBs were the most prevalent pollutants of dioxin and dioxin like compounds (Σ DL-PCBs LFK: 739 ng g⁻¹ lipids, Σ DL-PCBs FCE: 183 ng g⁻¹ lipids) since PCDD/F concentrations were low for both locations (mean 0.1 ng g⁻¹ lipids for LFK and FCE dolphins). The toxicity equivalences of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs expressed as TEQ in LFK and FCE dolphins is mainly expressed by DL-PCBs (81% LFK - 65% FCE). T-Hg concentrations in skin were significantly higher in FCE (FCE median 9314 ng g⁻¹ dw) compared to LFK dolphins (LFK median 2941 ng g⁻¹ dw). These concentrations are the highest recorded in bottlenose dolphins in the southeastern USA, and may be explained, at least partially, by the biogeochemistry of the Everglades and mangrove sedimentary habitats that create favourable conditions for the retention of mercury and make it available at high concentrations for aquatic predators.

Phytoremediation of realistic environmental concentrations (10 μg L−1) of the chiral pesticides tebuconazole and imazalil by Phragmites australis was investigated. This study focussed on removal dynamics, enantioselective mechanisms and transformation products (TPs) in both hydroponic growth solutions and plant tissues. For the first time, we documented uptake, translocation and metabolisation of these pesticides inside wetland plants, using enantioselective analysis. Tebuconazole and imazalil removal efficiencies from water reached 96.1% and 99.8%, respectively, by the end of the experiment (day 24). Removal from the solutions could be described by first-order removal kinetics with removal rate constants of 0.14 d−1 for tebuconazole and 0.31 d−1 for imazalil. Removal of the pesticides from the hydroponic solution, plant uptake, within plant translocation and degradation occurred simultaneously. Tebuconazole and imazalil concentrations inside Phragmites peaked at day 10 and 5d, respectively, and decreased thereafter. TPs of tebuconazole i.e., (5-(4-Chlorophenyl)-2,2-dimethyl-3-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-ylmethyl)-1,3-pentanediol and 5-(3-((1H-1,2,4-Triazol-1-yl)methyl)-3-hydroxy-4,4-dimethylpentyl)-2-chlorophenol) were quantified in solution, while the imazalil TPs (α-(2,4-Dichlorophenyl)-1H-imidazole-1-ethanol and 3-[1-(2,4-Dichlorophenyl)-2-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)ethoxy]-1,2-propanediol) were quantified in both solution and plant tissue. Pesticide uptake by Phragmites was positively correlated with evapotranspiration. Pesticide removal from the hydroponic solution was not enantioselective. However, tebuconazole was degraded enantioselectively both in the roots and shoots. Imazalil translocation and degradation inside Phragmites were also enantioselective: R-imazalil translocated faster than S-imazalil.

In the summer of 2010, more than 6 hundred wildfires broke out in western Russia because of an unprecedented intense heat wave that resulted from strong atmospheric blocking. The present study evaluated the CO2 emissions using GOSAT (Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite) data from July 23 to August 18, 2010 for western Russia. The results demonstrated that the GOSAT CAI (Cloud and Aerosol Imager) was well-suited for the identification of smoke plumes and that the GOSAT FTS (Fourier-Transform Spectrometer) TIR (Thermal InfraRed) could be used to calculate the height of the plumes at approximately 800 hPa (1.58 km). Using GOSAT data, we estimated that the 2010 fires in western Russia emitted 255.76 Tg CO2. We also calculated the CO2 emissions by employing the Biomass Burning Model (BBM) for the same study site and obtained a similar result of 261.82–302.48 Tg CO2. The present study proposes a new method for the evaluation of CO2 emissions from a wildfire using remote sensing data, which could be used to improve the knowledge of the burning of biomass at a regional or a continental scale, to reduce the uncertainties in modeling greenhouse gases emissions, and to further understand how wildfires impact the atmospheric carbon cycle and global warming.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) is a set of complex neurodevelopment disorders that is prevalent in children and is increasing at a steady rate in recent years. However, the etiology of autism is still poorly understood. Humans are at higher risk of chemical exposure than in the past as a result of the increasing usage of chemicals in various fields, including food preservation, agriculture, industrial production, etc. A number of environmental agents have been suggested as contributing factors to ASD pathogenesis, which includes heavy metals (Hg and Pb), persistent organic pollutants (DDT, PBDEs and PCBs) and emerging chemicals of concern (phthalates and BPA). These three main categories of toxicants could be the cause of ASD in children. Recent research into the causes of ASD that have been linked to environment factors are reviewed in this paper. There are evidence supporting the etiological link between exposure to environmental toxicants and the development of ASD. Children exposed to these toxicants in the environment exhibit signature traits of ASD and have been reported with high body burdens of these chemicals and/or their metabolites, which may provide an explanation for the observed relation, yet comprehensive evidence in humans is limited, highlighting the need for further research.

Wet deposition is not only a mechanism for removing atmospheric pollutants, but also a process which reflects loadings of atmospheric pollutants. Our previous study on wet deposition examined the effectiveness of short-term control measures on atmospheric particulate pollution, which were partly effective for organic pollutants of current input sources. In the present study, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) and hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), representative of legacy contaminants, were measured in the same samples collected throughout the entire year of 2010 in Guangzhou, a large urban center in South China. Concentrations of ∑DDT (sum of o,p′ and p,p′-DDT, o,p′ and p,p′-DDE, o,p′ and p,p′-DDD, and p,p′-DDMU) and ∑HCH (sum of α-, β-, γ-, and δ-HCH) in wet deposition were in the ranges of nd–69 (average: 1.8 ng L−1) and nd–150 ng L−1 (average: 5.1 ng L−1), respectively. In addition, the results of source diagnostics and backward air mass trajectories appeared to suggest the transport of antifouling paint derived DDTs from the coastal region off South China to Guangzhou. The combined wet and dry deposition flux of ∑HCH in the first quarter (January to March) was greater than that in the fourth quarter (October to December), while those of ∑DDT were comparable in the first and fourth quarters. Similar trends were also observed for the concentrations of ∑HCH and ∑DDT in aerosol samples. These results suggested the short-term pollution control measures implemented during the 16th Asian Games and 10th Asian Para Games (held in November and December 2010, respectively) did not work well for DDTs. The reduced input of HCHs during the fourth quarter was probably associated with the strict ban on lindane for food safety, which also exposed the weakness of control measures focusing mainly on the removal of atmospheric particulate matter.

Phytostabilisation can benefit from phytostimulatory rhizobacteria. Forty-three bacterial strains were isolated from the roots of the metallicolous legume Anthyllis vulneraria ssp. carpatica grown in a highly contaminated mine tailing (total Cd, Pb and Zn were up to 1200; 34,000; and 170,000 mg kg(-1), respectively). We aimed at evaluating their phytostimulatory effects on the development of leguminous metallophytes. Strains were screened for fluorescent siderophores and auxin synthesis, inorganic P solubilisation and 1-amino-cyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase (ACCd) activity to define a subset of 11 strains that were inoculated on the leguminous metallophytes A. vulneraria and Lotus corniculatus grown in diluted mine spoil (Zn 34,653; Pb 6842; and Cd 242, all in mg kg-1). All strains were affiliated to Pseudomonas spp. (except two), synthetised auxins and siderophores and solubilised P (except three), and seven of them were ACCd positive. The inoculation effects (shoot-root-nodule biomass, chlorophyll content) depended on legume species and bacterial strain genotype. Phytostimulation scores were unrelated to siderophore/auxin synthesis and P solubilisation rates. Inoculations of the strain nos. 17-43 triggered a 1.2-fold significant increase in the chlorophyll content of A. vulneraria. Chlorophyll content and root biomass of L. corniculatus were significantly increased following the inoculations of the strain nos. 17-22 (1.5-1.4-fold, respectively). The strongest positive effects were related to increases in the nodule biomass of L. corniculatus in the presence of three ACCd-positive strains (1.8-fold), one of which was the highest auxin producer. These data suggest to focus on interactions between ACCd activity and auxin synthesis to enhance nodulation of metallicolous legumes.

Understanding the sources, occurrence and sinks of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in the urban water cycle is important to protect and utilize local water resources. Concentrations of 22 target PFASs and general water quality parameters were determined monthly for a year in filtered water samples from five tributaries and three sampling stations of an urban water body. Of the 22 target PFASs, 17 PFASs were detected with a frequency >93% including PFCAs: C4-C12 perfluoroalkyl carboxylates, C4, C6, C8, and C10 perfluoroalkane sulfonates, perfluorooctane sulfonamides and perfluorooctane sulfonamide substances (FOSAMs), C10 perfluoroalkyl phosphonic acid (C10 PFPA), 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonic acid (6:2 FTSA) and C8/C8 perfluoroalkyl phosphinic acid (C8/C8-PFPIA). The most abundant PFASs in water were PFBS (1.4–55 ng/L), PFBA (1.0–23 ng/L), PFOS (1.5–24 ng/L) and PFOA (2.0–21 ng/L). In the tributaries, PFNA concentrations ranged from 1.2 to 87.1 ng/L except in the May 2013 samples of two tributaries, which reached 520 and 260 ng/L. Total PFAS concentrations in the sediment samples ranged from 1.6 to 15 ng/g d.w. with EtFOSAA, PFDoA, PFOS and PFDA being the dominant species. Based on water and sediment data, two types of sources were inferred: one-time or intermittent point sources and continuous non-point sources. FOSAMs and PFOS released continually from non-point sources, C8/C8 PFPIA, PFDoA and PFUnA was released from point sources. The highly water soluble short-chain PFASs including PFBA, PFPeA and PFBS remained predominantly in the water column. The factors governing solution phase concentrations appear to be compound hydrophobicity and sorption to suspended particles. Correlation of the dissolved phase concentrations with precipitation data suggested stormwater was a significant source of PFBA, PFBS, PFUnA and PFDoA. Negative correlations with precipitation indicated sources feeding FOSAA and FOSA directly into the tributaries.

Recently, portable monitors have been increasingly used to quantify air pollutant concentrations at high spatiotemporal resolution. A sampling campaign was conducted to measure the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and carbon monoxide (CO) exposure concentrations in transport microenvironments (TMEs) in Hong Kong in January and June 2015 using TSI DustTrak and Q-Trak portable monitors. The objectives were to: (1) calibrate DustTrak and Q-Trak; (2) evaluate variability between seasons and microenvironments; (3) estimate indoor/outdoor relationships; and (4) determine minimum sample size. Calibration equations, obtained through side-by-side measurement against stationary reference methods in winter and summer, were applied to correct the measured PM2.5 data set. In general, PM2.5 concentrations in all TMEs were significantly higher in winter than in summer. The mean PM2.5 concentration in winter was lower for underground sections of the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) metro system (31 μg/m3) than for other TMEs, whereas in summer TMEs had mean PM2.5 concentrations in the range of 10–15 μg/m3, with above-ground MTR train as an exception, at 23 μg/m3. PM2.5 concentrations measured in TMEs were strongly correlated with nearby air quality monitoring stations (AQMSs) measurements in winter, but in summer there was little correlation. The minimum sample size estimates varied more among TMEs in summer versus winter because of the differences in PM2.5 concentration distributions related to changes in ambient PM2.5 concentrations and ventilation practices. This study provides a feasible protocol on the calibration and application of portable monitors in TME air quality measurement and develops a method for estimating minimum sample size.
