Monitoring in the Western Pacific region shows evidence of seagrass decline in line with global trends

Seagrass systems of the Western Pacific region are biodiverse habitats, providing vital services to ecosystems and humans over a vast geographic range. SeagrassNet is a worldwide monitoring program that collects data on seagrass habitats, including the ten locations across the Western Pacific reported here where change at various scales was rapidly detected. Three sites remote from human influence were stable. Seagrasses declined largely due to increased nutrient loading (4 sites) and increased sedimentation (3 sites), the two most common stressors of seagrass worldwide. Two sites experienced near-total loss from of excess sedimentation, followed by partial recovery once sedimentation was reduced. Species shifts were observed at every site with recovering sites colonized by pioneer species. Regulation of watersheds is essential if marine protected areas are to preserve seagrass meadows. Seagrasses in the Western Pacific experience stress due to human impacts despite the vastness of the ocean area and low development pressures.

In this study, the bioremediation potentials of two seaweeds (Sargassum hemiphyllum and S. henslowianum) against pollution in a coastal mariculture area of Shenzhen, South China, were investigated by comparing the growth, nutrient bioaccumulation capacity of plants from the seaweed bed (control site) with plants from the fish farm. Results indicated that both species are potential candidates for bioremediation in the fish farm areas in terms of their high growth rates and high bioaccumulation capacities on inorganic nutrients. Both Sargassum spp. contain high levels of crude protein (11.7–14.0%) and crude fat (2.2–2.7%), suggesting high nutritional values. The S. hemiphyllum may serve as a good aquaculture fodder with high nutritional compositions and low heavy metal contents. However, heavy metals (Cr, Pb and Cd) of S. henslowianum exceed the maximum allowable concentrations as aquatic feed, which restricts its fodder application. In general, the results of this study may contribute to the marine pollution bioremediation in the coastal areas of South China, especially in mariculture zones.

The degree of iron pyritization (DOP) and degree of trace metal pyritization (DTMP) were evaluated in mangrove soil profiles from an estuarine area located in Rio de Janeiro (SE Brazil). The soil pH was negatively correlated with redox potential (Eh) and positively correlated with DOP and DTMP of some elements (Mn, Cu and Pb), suggesting that pyrite oxidation generated acidity and can affect the importance of pyrite as a trace metal-binding phase, mainly in response to spatial variability in tidal flooding. Besides these aerobic oxidation effects, results from a sequential extraction analyses of reactive phases evidenced that Mn oxidized phase consumption in reaction with pyrite can be also important to determine the pyritization of trace elements. Cumulative effects of these aerobic and anaerobic oxidation processes were evidenced as factors affecting the capacity of mangrove soils to act as a sink for trace metals through pyritization processes.

A simple methodology for the determination of bioavailability of fourteen metals in coastal sediments has been developed by simulating the conditions of digestive process of marine fishes. With this aim, a representative sediment composite sample was treated with hydrochloric acid solutions at different pH values, temperatures and contact times, in the presence and absence of Pepsin and Trypsin. The addition of Pepsin and Trypsin did not affect the extraction of most elements. As a result of the present study, the digestion with a hydrochloric acid solution at pH 1, 40°C and 12h is proposed. Adjustments of the temperature and time reaction could be made according to the specific ecosystem under study. The amount of metal extracted by other methods based on acetic acid was lower than that extracted by HCl treatment proposed.

This study aimed to evaluate airborne meso–and–thermophilic actinomycete concentrations and their types at a wastewater treatment plant and a biosolid landfill, in Egypt. Air samples were collected at 200m upwind, and onsite and 300m downwind by using liquid impinger sampler, calibrated to draw 12.5L/min, for 20 minutes. The concentrations ranged between 0.0–7 360CFU/m3 for mesophilic, and 106–586CFU/m3 for thermophilic actinomycetes. Airborne actinomycete concentrations exceeded the suggested occupational exposure limit value of 100CFU/m3. No significant correlations were found between actinomycete concentrations onsite and 300m downwind distance. At the biosolid landfill, upwind thermophilic actinomycetes significantly differed (p<0.05) from onsite and 300m downwind. A total of 40 and 69 airborne actinomycete isolates belonging to 8 genera were identified at the wastewater treatment plant and biosolid landfill. Streptomyces were the dominant actinomycete species. Streptomyces diastaticus, Pseudonocardia compacta and Catellatospora ferruginea were only detected at the biosolid landfill site. Meso–and–thermophilic actinomycetes positively associated with relative humidity, and wind speed positively correlated with onsite thermophilic actinomycetes (r=0.65) at the biosolid landfill. Temperature showed negative effect on survivability of mesophilic actinomycetes (r=-0.8) onsite of the wastewater treatment plant. Waste application facilities increase actinomycete concentrations onsite which may consequently deteriorate air quality in the nearby areas.

Ipomoea nil (L.) Roth. cv. ‘Scarlett O’Hara’ was evaluated as a tropical bioindicator species sensitive to ozone (O3). A total of nine field experiments were performed, with 28 days of exposure each. Visible leaf injuries, carbon assimilation (Asat) and stomatal conductance (gs) were quantified and correlated to oscillations in environmental conditions and accumulated ozone exposure over a threshold of 40 ppb h (AOT40). The values of gas exchange and leaf injury continuously varied throughout the study period. Asat and leaf injury (chlorosis) were higher in spring than in others seasons. The gs was higher in autumn. The analyses of the abiotic and biotic variables revealed an opposing trend between the Asat and both leaf injury and AOT40. Ozone levels were moderate and its relationship with gs was inverse. This may be the cause of the moderate injury. ‘Scarlett O’Hara’ is sensitive to O3 and has potential as an O3 bioindicator in sub–tropical regions.

Sediment quality has been assessed within the Avilés estuary, an important industrial area in the NW of Spain. The study started with a geochemical characterization of the superficial sediments that revealed some anomalous metal(oid)s concentrations in sensitive areas such as beaches or dunes. These data were studied by means of multivariate statistical techniques and enrichment factors calculation to evaluate the correlations and geochemical origin within the different elements. A novel approach using the combination of enrichment factors with a sequential application of factor analysis, clustering and kriging was essential to identify the possible sources of pollution. The collected information suggested that Cd (strongly correlated with Zn and Pb) was the potentially toxic element most widely distributed and problematic. Furthermore, particulate emissions from Zn metallurgy, as well as dust generated by the mineral loading and stockpile activities in the port were identified as the most important sources of pollution.

Levels of microplastics (MPs) in China are completely unknown. This study characterizes suspended MPs quantitatively and qualitatively for the Yangtze Estuary and East China Sea. MPs were extracted via a floatation method. MPs were counted and categorized according to shape and size under a stereomicroscope. The MP densities were 4137.3±2461.5 and 0.167±0.138n/m3, respectively, in the estuarine and the sea samples. Plastic abundances varied significantly in the estuary. Higher densities in three sea trawls confirmed that rivers were the important sources of MP to the marine environment. Plastic particles (>5mm) were observed with a maximum size of 12.46mm, but MPs (0.5–5mm) constituted more than 90% by number of items. The most frequent geometries were fibres, followed by granules and films. Plastic spherules occurred sparsely. Transparent and coloured plastics comprised the majority of the particles. This study provides clues in understanding the fate and potential sources of MPs.

The Florida Panhandle continental shelf environment was exposed to oil from the BP oil well failure in the Gulf of Mexico during 2010. Floating mats of oil were documented by satellite, but the distribution of dissolved components of the oil in this region was unknown. Shipek® grab samples of sediments were taken during repeated cruises between June 2010 and June 2012 to test for selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as indicators of this contamination. Sediments were collected as composite samples, extracted using standard techniques, and PAHs were quantified by GC/MS-SIM. PAHs in samples from the continental slope in May 2011 were highest near to the failed well site and were reduced in samples taken one year later. PAHs from continental shelf sediments during the spill (June 2010) ranged from 10 to 165ngg−1. Subsequent cruises yielded variable and reduced amounts of PAHs across the shelf. The data suggest that PAHs were distributed widely across the shelf, and their subsequent loss to background levels suggests these compounds were of oil spill origin. PAH half-life estimates by regression were 70–122days for slope and 201days for shelf stations.

The European Water Framework Directive (WFD) establishes a framework for the protection and improvement of all water bodies including transitional waters; its final objective is to achieve at least ‘good status’ by 2015. In the present work, a hierarchical sampling design was applied to analyze the influence of anthropogenic inputs on the spatial distribution of metals, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) dibenzofurans (PCDFs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in sediment at four areas in Pialassa Baiona coastal lagoon. In order to assess the chemical status, levels of priority substances and other pollutants were compared with the recently developed national Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) and site specific background levels for metals. Levels of mercury and PCBs were particularly high and exceeded their national EQS values at all sampled areas, thus not contributing to the achievement of a good chemical status of this transitional water body according to the WFD classification.
