Arsenic, a class I human carcinogen, is ubiquitously found throughout the environment and around the globe, posing a great public health concern. Notably, Bangladesh and regions of West Bengal have been found to have high levels (0.5–4600 μg/L) of arsenic drinking water contamination, and approximately 50 million of the world’s 200 million people chronically exposed to arsenic in Bangladesh alone. This study was carried out to examine genome-wide gene expression changes in individuals chronically exposed to arsenic-contaminated drinking water. Our study population includes twenty-nine Bangladeshi female participants with urinary arsenic levels ranging from 22.32 to 1828.12 μg/g creatinine. RNA extracted from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were evaluated using RNA-Sequencing analysis. Our results indicate that a total of 1,054 genes were significantly associated with increasing urinary arsenic levels (FDR p < 0.05), which include 418 down-regulated and 636 up-regulated genes. Further Ingenuity Pathway Analysis revealed potential target genes (DAPK1, EGR2, APP), microRNAs (miR-155, -338, −210) and pathways (NOTCH signaling pathway) related to arsenic carcinogenesis. The selection of female-only participants provides a homogenous study population since arsenic has significant sex dependent effects, and the wide exposure range provides new insight for key gene expression changes that correlate with increasing urinary arsenic levels.

Trace elements and Hg isotopic composition were investigated in mineralized rocks, barren rocks, and mineral soils in the Xianfeng prospect, a shallow buried epithermal gold deposit in northeastern China, to understand whether this deposit has left a diagnostic geochemical fingerprint to its weathered horizon. All the rocks and soils display congruent patterns for immobile elements (large ion lithophile elements, high field strength elements, and rare earth elements), which reflect the subduction-related tectonic setting. Both mineralized rocks and soils showed common enrichment of elemental suite As–Ag–Sb–Hg, suggesting that the Xianfeng gold deposit has released these elements into its weathered horizon. Similar mercury isotopic composition was observed between mineralized rocks (δ²⁰²Hg: −0.21 ± 0.70‰; Δ¹⁹⁹Hg: −0.02 ± 0.12‰; 2SD) and barren rocks (δ²⁰²Hg: −0.46 ± 0.48‰; Δ¹⁹⁹Hg: 0.00 ± 0.10‰; 2SD), suggesting that mercury in the Xianfeng deposit is mainly derived from the magmatic rocks. Mineralized soils (δ²⁰²Hg: −0.44 ± 0.60‰; −0.03 ± 0.14‰; 2SD) and barren soils (δ²⁰²Hg: −0.54 ± 0.68‰; Δ¹⁹⁹Hg: −0.05 ± 0.14‰; 2SD) displayed congruent Hg isotopic signals to the underlying rocks, suggesting limited Hg isotope fractionation during the release of Hg from ore deposit to soils via weathering. This study reveals evidence of a simple and direct geochemical link between this shallow buried hydrothermal deposit and its weathered horizon, and highlights that the weathering of shallow-buried hydrothermal gold deposits can release a substantial amount of heavy metals (e.g. Hg, As and Sb) to surface soil.

Research on the atmospheric occurrence of short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) in industrialized areas is scarce. In this study, we investigated the concentrations, profile, and spatial distribution of SCCPs in the highly industrialized and developed areas of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) in China using polyurethane foam passive air samplers. Sampling was performed during two separate periods in 2011. The concentrations of atmospheric SCCPs ranged from 6.1 to 63 ng m⁻³ in summer and 6.2–42 ng m⁻³ in winter. The C₁₀ and C₁₁ groups were the predominant carbon groups in all the samples. Different congener patterns between summer and winter were found, indicating that congeners in the air in winter may be influenced by local and external sources. The highest level of SCCPs was found in Suzhou, which is a highly industrialized area with many manufactories including electronic industries and plastic factories. Higher levels of SCCPs were found in the air than polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDEs), suggesting that the production and use of SCCPs were much higher than prohibited or restricted persistent organic pollutants (e.g., PCBs, OCPs, and PBDEs). Future studies should investigate the different sources of atmospheric SCCPs by conducting a comprehensive assessment of SCCP exposure.

Biomanipulation is an efficient tool to control eutrophication and cyanobacterial blooms in temperate lakes. However, the effects of this technique are still unclear for tropical ecosystems. Herein, we evaluated the effects of the biomanipulation on cyanobacterial biomass in a tropical shallow reservoir in Northeast Brazil. A mesocosm experiment was conducted in Tapacurá reservoir (Pernambuco) with eight treatments, in which we factorially manipulated the presence of submerged macrophytes (Ceratophyllum demersum), large herbivorous zooplankton (Sarsilatona serricauda), and nutrients (0.4 mg L⁻¹ of nitrogen and 0.5 mg L⁻¹ of phosphorus). On the first, fifth, and tenth days, we analyzed the total biomass of cyanobacteria, and the morphotypes coccoid, heterocyted filamentous, and non-heterocyted filamentous cyanobacteria; these components were compared through a three-way ANOVA. The bloom was composed mainly of five Microcystis morphospecies (coccoids) and Raphidiopsis raciborskii (heterocyted filaments). On the fifth day of the experiment, the combined addition of macrophytes and zooplankton was more efficient at controlling cyanobacterial biomass. On the tenth day, all macrophyte treatments showed significant cyanobacterial biomass reduction, decreasing up to 84.8%. On the other hand, nutrients and zooplankton, both isolated and combined, had no significant effect. Macrophytes also reduced the biomass of coccoids, heterocyted filaments, and non-heterocyted filaments when analyzed separately on the tenth day. Ceratophyllum demersum was more efficient at controlling the bloom than the addition of large herbivorous zooplankton, which could be related to allelopathy since cyanobacterial biomass was also reduced when nutrients were added. The addition of submerged macrophytes with allelopathic potential, associated with the increase of large herbivorous zooplankton, proved to be an efficient technique for controlling tropical cyanobacterial blooms.

PM2.5 exposure aggravates type 2 diabetes, in which inflammatory factors play an important role. In this study, we aimed to explore the mechanisms responsible for aggravating diabetes after PM2.5 exposure, and study the roles of inflammatory factors in insulin-resistant type 2 diabetes. Our study indicated that short-time PM2.5 exposure enhances insulin resistance in type 2 diabetic rats and significantly raises inflammatory factors, including IL-6, TNF-α, and MCP-1, in lungs. However, we found that of these inflammatory factors only IL-6 levels are elevated in blood, liver, adipose tissue, and macrophages, but not in skeletal muscle. IL-6 induced activation of the STAT3/SOCS3 pathway in liver, but not other downstream pathways including STAT1, ERK1/2, and PI3K. Both STAT3 inhibition and IL-6 neutralization effectively alleviated the disorders of glucose metabolism after PM2.5 exposure. Taken together, this suggests that the systemic increase in IL-6 may play an important role in the deterioration of the type 2 diabetes via IL-6/STAT3/SOCS3 pathway in liver after short-time exposure to PM2.5. Besides, we unexpectedly found a stronger resistance to the PM2.5 exposure-induced increase in IL-6 in skeleton muscle than those of many other tissues.

The metalloid arsenic is one of the most conspicuous groundwater contaminants in the Indian subcontinent and its removal from aqueous medium is the main focus of this study. The study aims at functionalising melanin using iron and copper for the efficient removal of arsenic and rendering water fit for consumption. Melanin obtained from the marine bacteria Pseudomonas stutzeri was functionalised by iron impregnation (Fe-melanin) and copper impregnation (Cu-melanin). Morphological studies using FESEM portrayed the impregnated iron and copper granules on the surface of melanin, while XRD analysis confirmed the presence of Fe₂O₃ and CuO on melanin. Adsorption studies on As (V) and As (III) were conducted using Fe-melanin and Cu-melanin for different operating variables like pH, temperature and contact time. More than 99% per cent of As (III) and As (V) from water was removed at a pH range between 4 and 6 within 50 min in the case of Fe-melanin and 80 min for Cu-melanin. Adsorption equilibrium studies showed better fit with Langmuir adsorption isotherm and had good agreement with Redlich-Peterson’s three-parameter model. The maximum adsorption capacities of Fe-melanin and Cu-melanin obtained from Langmuir adsorption model are 50.12 and 20.39 mg/g, respectively, for As (V) and similarly 39.98 and 19.52 mg/g, respectively, for As (III). Arsenic-binding to the functionalised melanin was confirmed using FT-IR and the XPS analysis. Reuse of the adsorbent was effectively done by desorbing the iron and copper together with the bound As (III) and As (V) and further re-impregnation of iron and copper in melanin. Re-functionalised melanin showed 99% adsorption efficiency up to four cycles of adsorption/desorption.

Heavy metal contaminants in Mirror Peninsula, East Antarctica, have rarely been studied and the source and influencing factors are poorly understood. We sampled a grid of 189 topsoil samples from Mirror Peninsula and analyzed the concentrations of Zn, Cu, U, Cr, Ga, Pb, Hg, Se and As; we also calculated the chemical index of alteration (CIA), a proxy of weathering. The results show that the distributions of Cr, Ga, Cu, and Zn are associated with weathering; the distributions of As and Pb are related to vehicle use and unloading activities at the wharfs, respectively; and the distribution of Hg is likely associated with both anthropogenic impacts and biological activity. The contamination level of these heavy metals in Mirror Peninsula is relatively low and within the controllable range. Both weathering processes and anthropogenic impacts can cause the enrichment of heavy metals; thus reliable source apportionment is crucial in studying heavy metal enrichment and contamination.

Sulfate (SO₄²⁻) contamination in groundwater and surface water is an environmental problem of widespread concern. In this study, we combined stable isotope analyses of SO₄²⁻ (δ³⁴S and δ¹⁸O) and water (δ²H and δ¹⁸O) with a Bayesian mixing model (SIAR), for the first time, to identify sources and transformation of SO₄²⁻ in an area of northern China with multiple potential sources of pollution. The overall values of δ³⁴S and δ¹⁸O-SO₄²⁻ ranged from 1.3‰ to 16.3‰ and −3.8‰–8.8‰ in groundwater, and from −1.1‰ to 9.3‰ and 2.7‰–9.2‰ in surface waters, respectively. Analyses of SO₄²⁻ isotopes and water chemistry indicated that SO₄²⁻ in groundwater and surface water mainly originated from mixing of oxidation of sulfate, sewage, chemical fertilizers, dissolution of evaporite and precipitation. There was no significant correlation between δ³⁴S and δ¹⁸O and SO₄²⁻ concentration in groundwater, indicating that bacterial sulfate reduction did not affect the SO₄²⁻ isotopic composition. SIAR model showed the main sources of SO₄²⁻ in groundwater and surface water comprised oxidation of sulfide minerals and sewage. In groundwater, oxidation of sulfide minerals and sewage accounted for 37.5–44.5% and 35.5–42.7% of SO₄²⁻, respectively. In regard to surface waters, the contribution of oxidation of sulfide minerals to SO₄²⁻ was higher in the wet season (31.8 ± 9.9%) than in the intermediate (22.4 ± 7.8%) and dry (20.9 ± 8.2%) seasons, but the contribution proportion of sewage was slightly lower in the wet season (19.9 ± 8.5%) than in the intermediate (23.8 ± 8.7%) and dry (24.2 ± 8.5%) seasons. This study indicates that it is necessary for local government to improve the treatment infrastructure for domestic sewage and optimize methods of agricultural fertilization and irrigation to prevent SO₄²⁻ contamination of groundwater and surface water.

Antidepressants discharged into natural waters are likely to become a new type of endocrine pollutant, which may impact the interspecific relationship in aquatic ecosystem. Induced defense of cladocerans plays an important role in maintaining the balance of interspecific relationships between cladocerans and higher trophic levels. Here we studied the effects of antidepressant sertraline, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, on the induced defensive traits of Ceriodaphnia cornuta in response to invertebrate predator Chaoborus larvae kairomone, including morphological defense and life history traits. We also conducted the predation experiments to check the selection rate of Chaoborus larvae during directly ingesting C. cornuta that were exposed to Chaoborus larvae kairomone at high concentration of sertraline. Results showed sertraline had an interference effect on the induced morphological defense of C. cornuta in response to Chaoborus larvae kairomone, i.e. the high concentration of sertraline (20 and 100 μg L⁻¹) significantly reduced the horns induction. However, the different concentrations of sertraline generally did not affect the life history traits of C. cornuta, regardless of presence or absence of Chaoborus larvae kairomone. The predation experiment demonstrated that the inhibition of sertraline on the induced morphological defense of C. cornuta can promote the feeding selective efficiency of Chaoborus larvae, and thus cause C. cornuta easily to be predated by Chaoborus larvae. Our results suggested that sertraline at the concentrations that are not direct harmful to life history traits of C. cornuta can seriously affect the predator-prey relationship, indicating that effects of pollutants on interspecific relationships should be considered comprehensively to avoid underestimating the potential risk of pollutants to ecosystems.

The number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been increasing. Previous studies suggested potential association between pregnancy air pollution exposure and ASD. This systematic review and meta-analysis is intended to summarize the association between maternal exposure to outdoor air pollution and ASD in children by trimester based on recent studies.A systematic literature search in 3 databases (Medline, Embase, and Web of Science) was performed using subject headings related to ASD and air pollution since 2007. Eligible studies were screened and evaluated based on predetermined criteria. For meta-analyses, the studies were grouped by air pollutant and exposure time (prenatal period and trimesters). Within-group studies were standardized by log odds ratio (OR) and then combined by three meta-analysis methods: frequentist fixed and random effects models, and Bayesian random effects model.Initial search identified 1564 papers, of which 25 studies remained for final analysis after duplicates and ineligible studies were removed. Of the 25 studies, 13, 14, 12, and 7 studies investigated ASD in children associated with PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and ozone, respectively. The frequentist and Bayesian random effects models resulted in different statistical significance. For prenatal period, frequentist meta-analysis returned significant pooled ORs with 95% confidence intervals, 1.06(1.01,1.11) for PM2.5 and 1.02(1.01,1.04) for NO2, whereas Bayesian meta-analysis showed similar ORs with wider 95% posterior intervals, 1.06(1.00,1.13) for PM2.5 and 1.02(1.00,1.05) for NO2. Third trimester appeared to have higher pooled ORs for PM2.5, PM10, and ozone, but patterns in the time-varying associations over the trimester were inconsistent.For positive association between maternal exposure to ambient air pollution and ASD in children, there is some evidence for PM2.5, weak evidence for NO2 and little evidence for PM10 and ozone. However, patterns in associations over trimesters were inconsistent among studies and among air pollutants.
