Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are flame retardants and the congener 2, 2′, 4, 4′-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (PBDE-47) is capable of inducing thyroid endocrine disruption and developmental toxicity. However, little is known about whether developmental PBDE-47 exposure-elicited alterations in semen quality is associated with thyroid hormones (THs) perturbation. In this research, we sought to explore the impacts of gestational and lactational PBDE-47 exposure on adult sperm quantity and motility, and its link with THs levels. For this purpose, female Sprague-Dawley rats were administered environmentally relevant PBDE-47 levels (0.1, 1.0, 10 mg/kg/day) by oral gavage from prepregnancy through lactation cessation to achieve early-life exposure of offspring and to mimic the actual exposure. Sperm quantity and motility together with serum THs levels from male offspring were determined on postnatal day 88. In utero and lactational exposure to PBDE-47 boosted the weight gain while reduced the relative testis weight in adult male offspring. These were accompanied with the reductions in sperm counts (total and living sperm counts), the percentage of progressive sperm motility, sperm velocities (curvilinear velocity, straight-line velocity and average path velocity), motion path (beat cross frequency, linearity and wobble) and linear motile sperm parameters (count, motility and concentration). Further studies identified that the levels of serum triiodothyronine (T₃) were increased by PBDE-47 exposure and negatively associated with those differential semen parameters on quantity and motility. Collectively, our results indicate that exposure to low-level PBDE-47 during early-life development impairs semen quality in adult rats, which could be mediated partially by abnormal T₃ levels.

Use of elemental mercury (Hg⁰) to enhance placer gold recovery is an effective method dating back centuries, but is associated with significant atmospheric Hg⁰ losses. This method was widely used in the Canadian Klondike region during most of the 20th century when the mining industry experienced rapid growth. While the health risks associated with Hg⁰ pollution are now well understood, few studies have assessed the environmental legacy of Hg⁰ use in the Klondike. We used an annually resolved Picea glauca tree-ring Hg record (1864–2015) to reconstruct and evaluate changes in local atmospheric Hg⁰ concentrations associated with gold production at the Bear Creek mining camp. Major temporal trends in the record are consistent with the scale of Bear Creek operations and are distinct from background trends at an unimpacted control site. Tree-ring Hg concentration increased most rapidly from 1923 to 1930, a period when several major mining operations were consolidated at Bear Creek. The highest Hg concentrations, ∼2.5× greater than pre-mining era, occurred in the 1930s, coinciding with maximum gold production at this site. Post-World War II economic factors adversely affected the industry, causing declining tree-ring Hg concentrations from 1939 to 1966. Closure of the Bear Creek camp in 1966 coincided with the strongest tree-ring Hg decline, although a return to background levels did not occur until the 1990s, likely due to re-emission of legacy Hg⁰ from contaminated soils. Finally, a robust increase was observed over the last decade, similar to other tree-ring Hg records in N.W. Canada, which is linked to rising Hg⁰ emissions in Asia. The Bear Creek tree-ring Hg record provides a unique opportunity to study the impact of Klondike gold mining on the local environment at annual resolution and demonstrates great potential to use Picea tree rings to study past changes in atmospheric Hg⁰ from local and global emissions.A 151-year long, annually resolved tree-ring Hg record was developed at a historic Klondike gold-mining site to investigate the influence of mining-related Hg⁰ emissions on the local atmosphere and environment. Compared to a control site, the tree-ring Hg record documents highly elevated atmospheric Hg⁰ concentrations during the period mining activities were ongoing at this site.

Identification of pollution point source in rivers is strenuous due to accidental chemical spills or unmanaged wastewater discharges. It is crucial to take physical characteristics into account in the estimation of pollution sources. In this study, an integrated inverse modeling framework is developed to identify a point source of accidental water pollution based on the contaminant concentrations observed at monitoring sites in time series. The modeling approach includes a Markov chain Monte Carlo method based on Bayesian inference (Bayesian-MCMC) inverse model and a genetic algorithm (GA) inverse model. Both inverse models can estimate the pollution sources, including the emission mass quantity, release time, and release position in an accidental river pollution event. The developed model is first tested for a hypothetical case with field river conditions. The results show that the source parameters identified by the Bayesian-MCMC inverse model are very close to the true values with relative errors of 0.02% or less; the GA inverse model also works with relative errors in the range of 2%–7%. Additionally, the uncertainties associated with model parameters are analyzed based on global sensitive analysis (GSA) in this study. It is also found that the emission mass of pollution source positively correlates with the dispersion coefficient and the river cross-sectional area, whereas the flow velocity significantly affects release position and release time. A real case study in the Fen River is further conducted to test the applicability of the developed inverse modeling approach. Results confirm that the Bayesian-MCMC model performs better than the GA model in terms of accuracy and stability for the field application. The findings of this study would support decision-making during emergency responses to river pollution incidents.

Sodium percarbonate (SPC, 2Na₂CO₃∙3H₂O₂), is a compound that can be used under multiple environmental applications. In this work, SPC was employed as oxidant in the treatment of soil contaminated with diesel oil. The soil samples were collected during the earthmoving stage of RNEST Oil Refinery (Petrobras), Brazil. Then, the samples were air-dried, mixed and characterized. Subsequently, raw soil was contaminated with diesel and treated by photo-Fenton reaction (H₂O₂/Fe²⁺/UV). SPC played a significant role in the generation of hydroxyl radicals under the catalytic effect of ferrous ions (Fe²⁺), hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and radiation. These radicals provoked the photodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), in the soil remediation. A factorial design 3³ was carried out to assess the variables which most influenced the decrease in total organic carbon (TOC). The study was performed with the following variables: initial concentration of [H₂O₂] and [Fe²⁺], between 190.0 and 950.0 mmol L⁻¹ and 0.0–14.4 mmol L⁻¹, respectively. UV radiation was supplied from sunlight, blacklight lamps, and system without radiation. All experiments were performed with 5.0 g of contaminated soil in 50.0 mL of solution. The initial concentration of Fe²⁺ showed the statistically most significant effect. The oxidation efficiency evaluated in the best condition showed a decrease from 34,765 mg kg⁻¹ to 15,801 mg kg⁻¹ in TOC and from 85.750 mg kg⁻¹ to 20.770 mg kg⁻¹ in PAHs content. Moreover, the sums of low and high molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (LMW-PAHs and HMW-PAHs) were 19.537 mg kg⁻¹ and 1.233 mg kg⁻¹, respectively. Both values are within the limits recommended by the United Sates Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and evidenced the satisfactory removal of PAHs from contaminated soil, being an alternative to classic oxidation protocols.

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are widely used in industrial production and daily life because of their unique physicochemical properties, such as their hydrophobicity, oleophobicity, surface activity, and thermal stability. Perfluorosulfonic acids (PFSAs) and perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) are the most studied PFAAs due to their global occurrence. PFAAs are environmentally persistent, toxic, and the long-chain homologs are also bioaccumulative. Exposure to PFAAs may arise directly from emission or indirectly via the environmental release and degradation of PFAA precursors. Precursors themselves or their conversion intermediates can present deleterious effects, including hepatotoxicity, reproductive toxicity, developmental toxicity, and genetic toxicity. Therefore, exposure to PFAA precursors constitutes a potential hazard for environmental contamination. In order to comprehensively evaluate the environmental fate and effects of PFAA precursors and their connection with PFSAs and PFCAs, we review environmental biodegradability studies carried out with microbial strains, activated sludge, plants, and earthworms over the past decade. In particular, we review perfluorooctyl-sulfonamide-based precursors, including perfluroooctane sulfonamide (FOSA) and its N-ethyl derivative (EtFOSA), N-ethyl perfluorooctane sulfonamido ethanol (EtFOSE), and EtFOSE-based phosphate diester (DiSAmPAP). Fluorotelomerization-based precursors are also reviewed, including fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOH), fluorotelomer sulfonates (FTSA), and a suite of their transformation products. Though limited information is currently available on zwitterionic PFAS precursors, a preliminary review of data available for 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonamide betaine (FTAB) was also conducted. Furthermore, we update and refine the recent knowledge on biotransformation strategies with a focus on metabolic pathways and mechanisms involved in the biotransformation of PFAA precursors. The biotransformation of PFAA precursors mainly involves the cleavage of carbon-fluorine (C–F) bonds and the degradation of non-fluorinated functional groups via oxidation, dealkylation, and defluorination to form shorter-chained PFAAs. Based on the existing research, the current problems and future research directions on the biotransformation of PFAA precursors are proposed.

Exposure to heavy metals, such as lead, is a global public health problem. Lead has a long historic relation to several adverse health conditions and was recently classified as an endocrine disruptor. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of subacute exposure to lead on the thyroid gland function. Adult male and female Wistar rats received a lead acetate solution containing 10 or 25 mg/kg, by gavage, three times a week, for 14 days. One week later, behavioral testing showed no alterations in anxiety and motor-exploratory parameters, as evaluated by Open-Field and Plus-Maze Tests, but impairment in learning and memory was found in the male 25 mg/kg lead-treated group and in both female lead-treated groups, as evaluated by the Inhibitory Avoidance Test. After one week, serum levels of tT3 were reduced in the 25 mg/kg female group and in the 10 mg∕ kg male group. However, tT4 levels were increased in the 25 mg/kg male group and in both female treated groups. TSH levels did not change and lead serum levels were undetectable. Morphologic alterations were observed in the thyroid gland, including abnormal thyroid parenchyma follicles of different sizes, epithelial stratification and vacuolization of follicular cells, decrease in colloid eosinophilia and vascular congestion, accompanied by morphometric alterations. An increase in collagen deposition was also observed. No differences were observed in TPO activity or protein expression, H₂O₂ generation by NADPH oxidases or hepatic D1 mRNA expression. However, thyroid NIS protein expression was considerably decreased in the male and female lead-treated groups, while TSHr expression was decreased in the 25 mg/kg female lead-treated group. These findings demonstrated that subacute exposure to lead acetate disrupts thyroid gland function in both sexes, leading to morphophysiological impairment and to changes in learning and memory abilities.

The Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) is the first programme to tackle carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from a single industry at the global level, to realize the carbon-neutral growth of international flights from 2020 onwards. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a drastic decline in the global aviation industry. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has adjusted the CORSIA by removing 2020 emissions from the baseline, which now will only be based on 2019 emissions. We estimate that the total carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from global international flights decreased by 70 % from February to July 2020 compared to those in 2019. Our analysis suggests that the annual CO₂ emissions from international flights during the pilot stage of CORSIA (2021–2023) will be far below the revised baseline even if the global aviation industry could embrace an optimistic recovery. The major airline companies will have very limited motivations due to the CORSIA scheme to implement mitigation actions proactively. Therefore, more progressive actions are needed to align the industry recovery of global aviation and climate change mitigation during the post-COVID-19 period.

Stormflow runoff is the most important agent for phosphorus (P) input to reservoirs, as the particulates contained in runoff carry a substantial amount of P. The settling process of particulates affects the P content of water, and the distribution of particulates determines the P distribution in reservoir sediment. An understanding of flood impacts on the transport, transition, and accumulation of P in a reservoir is critical to reservoir management. In this study, water samples before and after flooding and sediment samples after flooding were collected from Biliuhe Reservoir in Northeast China. P content and load in the water and P-fractions and particle sizes of the sediments were analyzed. Results showed that total particulate P (TPP) increased sharply from 1.56 to 26.72 t after flooding, whereas dissolved organic P (DOP) decreased markedly from 3.24 to 1.17 t, which was largely caused by biological uptake directly or indirectly before flooding. Orthophosphate (PO43−) shared a similar trend with TPP, indicating that PO43− could be adsorbed onto settling particulates, helping to reduce the reactive P introduced by flooding. Reservoir sediment showed a fining trend downstream and the clay fraction exhibited an obvious correlation with P-fractions, demonstrating that the distribution of particulate matter determined P distribution in the sediment. This study also found that particulates from the largest tributary (Biliu River) were only minimally transported from its reservoir entrance to the dam because of a longer travel distance, while contrastingly, particulates from a smaller tributary (Bajia River) were maximally carried to the dam because of a shorter distance. Our fundings suggests that surface water in the reservoir should be released prior to flooding in order to mitigate control of P in the water, moreover, it is necessary to strengthen the effectiveness of pollutant control projects at the reservoir entrance of the Bajia River.

Mammalian polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) metabolism has not been systematically explored with nontarget high-resolution mass spectrometry (Nt-HRMS). Here we investigated the importance of the gut microbiome in PCB biotransformation by Nt-HRMS analysis of feces from conventional (CV) and germ-free (GF) adult female mice exposed to a single oral dose of an environmental PCB mixture (6 mg/kg or 30 mg/kg in corn oil). Feces were collected for 24 h after PCB administration, PCB metabolites were extracted from pooled samples, and the extracts were analyzed by Nt-HRMS. Twelve classes of PCB metabolites were detected in the feces from CV mice, including PCB sulfates, hydroxylated PCB sulfates (OH-PCB sulfates), PCB sulfonates, and hydroxylated methyl sulfone PCBs (OH-MeSO₂-PCBs) reported previously. We also observed eight additional PCB metabolite classes that were tentatively identified as hydroxylated PCBs (OH-PCBs), dihydroxylated PCBs (DiOH-PCBs), monomethoxylated dihydroxylated PCBs (MeO-OH-PCBs), methoxylated PCB sulfates (MeO-PCB sulfates), mono-to tetra-hydroxylated PCB quinones ((OH)ₓ-quinones, x = 1–4), and hydroxylated polychlorinated benzofurans (OH-PCDF). Most metabolite classes were also detected in the feces from GF mice, except for MeO-OH-PCBs, OH-MeSO₂-PCBs, and OH-PCDFs. Semi-quantitative analyses demonstrate that relative PCB metabolite levels increased with increasing dose and were higher in CV than GF mice, except for PCB sulfates and MeO-PCB sulfates, which were higher in GF mice. These findings demonstrate that the gut microbiome plays a direct or indirect role in the absorption, distribution, metabolism, or excretion of PCB metabolites, which in turn may affect toxic outcomes following PCB exposure.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is one of the major environmental problems impacting aquatic ecosystems globally. We studied changes in the community composition of macroinvertebrates and amino acid (AA) profiles of dominant taxa along an AMD contamination gradient within the Dee River, Queensland, Australia to understand how AMD can affect the biomolecular composition of macroinvertebrates. Taxa richness and community composition of macroinvertebrates changed widely along the AMD gradient with significantly lower taxa richness recorded at the polluted sites compared to upstream and downstream sites. The Dipteran families: Chironomidae and Ceratopogonidae, the Odonata family Gomphidae, and the Coleoptera family Dytiscidae were the only families found at all sampling sites and were used here for AA analysis. There were significant variations in the AA profiles among the studied taxa. The AA profile of each taxon also varied among upstream, polluted and downstream sites suggesting that contamination of a river system with acid mine drainage not only alters the overall macroinvertebrate community composition but also significantly influences the AA profile of organisms that are tolerant to AMD. This study highlights the potential of using AA profiling to study the response of aquatic organisms to contamination gradients such as those associated with AMD.
