Harmful factors in the workplaces of tractor drivers
2016
Butkus, R., Aleksandras Stulginskis Univ., Akademija, Kauno reg. (Lithuania) | Vasiliauskas, G., Aleksandras Stulginskis Univ., Akademija, Kauno reg. (Lithuania)
Results of various studies show that the most prevailing risk factors on workers of agricultural sector are noise and vibration. These hazards are especially important in transportation and most field works. Results from previous studies show that vibro-acoustic environment in tractors operated in Lithuania usually cannot be attributed as acceptable, but technical solutions implemented by manufacturers had definitely positive influence on working conditions. Noise level reduced from 90 dB(A) (tractors of 1980 – 1990 years of manufacture) to 73 dB(A) (tractors manufactured from year 2000). As renewal of tractors is not sufficient, there is still a large number of old machinery i.e. noise levels might be as high as 92 dB(A) which allows to work safely only one hour per day without personal protection. It was found that values of whole body vibration (WBV) during ploughing operation might be as high as 1.5 m∙sE-2 which excess the vibration limit value of 1.15 m•sE-2, while hand-arm vibration (HAV) did not exceed the vibration action value of 2.5 m•sE-2. Significant effect of tyre pressure was noticed on vibration values measured on driver’s seat. Vibration acceleration values may be reduced to safe 0.5 m•s-2 by selecting appropriate tyre pressure.

2024
Strubergs, Aigars | Sisenis, Linards | Sarmulis, Ziedonis
The study aims to find out the efficiency of periodic training of the harvester (cut-to-length) operator, using the automatically saved data of the harvesterʼs information system. It has been established that logging service providers and training institutions do not analyse the operatorʼs work before starting the training; therefore, the training is carried out according to certain, standard programs, without going into the previous performance of each trainee operator. The research uses data automatically saved by Ponsse harvesters during the year, obtained from Ponsse Manager. The study found that by using automatically saved data of the harvester information and performing data grouping with subsequent analysis, it is possible to determine the progress in the execution of specific stem processing operations and to identify operations where the instructor should pay increased attention during training. The research analysed the data of 3 operators, obtained while working with Ponsse harvesters in clear-cutting. In the study, it was found that operator A reduced stem processing time by 3%, labour productivity increased by 15%, and fuel consumption per l m⁻³ decreased by 14% over 3 months. Operator B, after training, saw a 20% reduction in stem processing time, a 13% increase in work productivity, and a 5% increase in fuel consumption l m⁻³ over 3 months. Operator C had a 10% increase in stem processing time, a 1% increase in labour productivity, and a 2% increase in fuel consumption l m³ after training.

2024
Sproģe, Ilze | Joppe, Aina | Solovjova, Irina
Employment is a crucial indicator of economic development and growth, making employment policy a key component of national and regional socio-economic strategies. Self-employment is a significant form of employment widely practiced in Latvia and other EU Member States as a means to initiate businesses and integrate into the labour market. As of 2022, about 27.66 million self-employed individuals, constituting roughly 14% of the EU workforce, contribute to the European economy. Modern work dynamics allow individuals to earn income as employees or self-employed, with flexible employment forms, including self-employment, gaining popularity due to several advantages. These advantages include increased flexibility, personal independence, opportunities to join or stay in the labour market, and the potential to earn additional income alongside a primary job. However, self-employment also has its drawbacks. It can be exploited to evade taxes and bypass labour laws, leading to ʻfalse self-employmentʼ. While this may appear advantageous for the self-employed, it primarily benefits employers by reducing their costs. This practice can severely limit the self-employedʼs access to social protection and adversely impact their quality of life and financial stability in situations of social risk, such as illness, disability, or retirement. Self-employment involves various economic, psychological, sociological, and managerial dimensions and entails considerable risk. Global trends indicate that individuals in lower-income countries are more likely to be self-employed, whereas those in higher-income countries tend to have paid employment.

2023
Vintere, Anna | Bartusevičienė, Inga | Aruvee, Eve | Rimkuviene, Daiva
Individuals’ emotional well-being is determined by several factors, including the ability to cope with daily stress and the ability to cope with various daily challenges. Ability of the management to provide favourable psychoemotional and psychosocial conditions within their team is particularly important. However, managers do not always have the knowledge and skills to lead their teams. For the development of the methodology, a study of the scientific literature on topical issue like healthy workplace was performed. The empirical part of the study is based on the results of the survey conducted Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Sweden within the Nordplus project ‘Dealing with anxiety during a pandemic to enhance adult well-being’ on the impact of COVID-19, as well as the training that would be necessary for the managers of companies or organizations to promote emotional wellbeing in the workplace. The comparative study was conducted from the perspective of both employees and managers. The results show that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on workplace and the well-being of employees was not strong for the respondents, depending mainly on the job position, the size of the organization and country. Managers and employees consider various psychological trainings essential.
