ABSTRACT Castor bean is an oilseed crop which is able to adapt to various edaphoclimatic conditions and has considerable contents of oil in its seeds, with potential for use in the castor oil industry. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate changes in membrane damage, water status and gas exchanges in castor bean plants (cv. ‘BRS Energia’) in response to irrigation water salinity and cationic composition. Randomized blocks were used to test six cationic compositions (S1 - Control; S2 - Na+; S3 - Ca2+; S4 - Na+ + Ca2+; S5 - K+ and S6 - Na+ + Ca2+ + Mg2+), in four replicates. Plants in the control treatment were subjected to irrigation using water of low electrical conductivity (S1 - ECw = 0.6 dS m-1), whereas those in the other treatments were irrigated using 4.5 dS m-1 water prepared with different cations. Higher leaf succulence associated with lower water saturation deficit is an indication of tolerance to salt stress in castor bean plants irrigated with K+-rich water. The presence of Na+ in irrigation water caused the highest water saturation deficit in castor bean leaf blades. The lowest damage in cell membranes was observed in plants irrigated with Ca2+-rich water. The damaging effect of salt stress on castor bean gas exchanges depends on the cationic composition of water and occurred in the following order: Na+>Na++Ca2+>Ca2+> Na++Ca2++Mg2+>K+.

ABSTRACT The evaluation of the yield of crops and their efficiency of use of water and nitrogen is essential to optimize the management of production factors. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of irrigation regimes and nitrogen doses in fertigation on fruit yield and efficiency of use of water and nitrogen by the Top Gun watermelon hybrid. The study was conducted in Bom Jesus, Piauí, Brazil, from August 4 to October 15, 2015. The study used a completed randomized block design with four repetitions, five irrigation depths (110.17, 156.86, 221.16, 268.87, and 317.09 mm), and five doses of nitrogen in fertigation (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 kg ha-1 applied as urea). Fruit yield and water use efficiency were not affected by nitrogen doses; however, there was a significant interaction of the factors for the efficiency of nitrogen use. The highest yield (39,549.45 kg ha-1) was obtained using 233.48 mm of water during the growth cycle. The water depth that promoted the maximum efficiency of water use was 110.42 mm, and nitrogen use was most efficient using 232.21 mm of water and 50 kg ha-1 of nitrogen.

| ABSTRACT Salinity is one of the main causes of crop yield decline in arid and semi-arid regions, requiring the use of tolerant species that allow cultivation in these areas. The objective of this study was to determine the emergence, initial growth and tolerance of pepper species irrigated with saline waters. The experiment was conducted in a protected environment (greenhouse), with a 5 x 3 factorial scheme, using four replicates of 30 seeds each. The experimental design was a completely randomized design, involving five irrigation water salinity levels (0.6, 1.2, 1.8, 2.4 and 3.0 dS m-1) and three species of pepper [E1 - Capsicum annuum (“Doce Comprida”); E2 - Capsicum frutescens (“Malagueta”); E3 - Capsicum chinense (“De Bico”)]. Pepper seedlings were grown in trays of 30 cells with a capacity of 0.1 dm3 of substrate. During the first 30 days after sowing, seedlings were monitored for emergence, initial growth and dry matter accumulation. As the salinity of the irrigation water increased, there was a reduction in the emergence, growth and phytomass accumulation of C. annuum, C. frutescens and C. chinense peppers. These species tolerate saline waters of up to 1.78, 2.71 and 1.55 dS m-1 respectively, in the initial development phase, with C. frutescens being the most tolerant to saline stress, and C. chinense the most sensitive.
