| ABSTRACT Sugarcane is one of the most affected crops by water scarcity. The efficient use of the irrigation water is an alternative to minimize this problem. The objective of this work was to evaluate biometric parameters, yield, and technological quality of sugarcane plants subjected to different controlled water deficit regimes in the sub-middle São Francisco Valley, Brazil. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, in two crop cycles, with three replications, with ten treatments consisted of three controlled water deficits (15%, 30%, and 45% of the crop evapotranspiration - ETc), applied at three development stages of the plant - sprouting and tillering (Stage I), grand growth (Stage II), and maturation (Stage III) - and a control with 100% of the ETc throughout the entire crop cycle. The controlled water deficit did not affect the technological quality of the sugarcane in any development stage. The sugarcane yield was higher when using a controlled water deficit of 30% of ETc in the sprouting and tillering stages of the plants. The water deficit of 15% of ETc is recommended for the grand growth, or maturation stages of the sugarcane plants for a greater water use efficiency of the production system.

| ABSTRACT Soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) is an important tool for water management in irrigated agriculture. However, factors such as texture and structure of soils influence SWCC behavior. According to the literature, wetting and drying cycles alter SWCC. A similar process of re-saturation and drying occurs during SWCC obtainment under laboratory conditions. Based on the hypothesis that re-saturation process alters SWCC due to clay loss in the sample, this study aimed to obtain the SWCC, S index, and pore size distribution from samples submitted to re-saturation cycles, as well as from not re-saturated samples but under higher matric potentials (-2, -4, -6, -8, and -10 kPa). For this, disturbed and undisturbed soil samples, collected from the A (sandy texture) and Btg (sandy clay loam texture) horizons of a Argissolo Acizentado, were used. After obtaining SWCC, each air-dried soil sample was submitted to particle size and clay dispersed in water analyses to verify whether the soil lost clay. The experimental design was a completely randomized design with two methods of SWCC constructing (with and without re-saturation) and eight replications. The re-saturation process generates a loss of clay in the sample, not causing significant changes in SWCC considering the assessed textural soil classes. In addition, sandy soil samples are more sensitive to changes in pore size distribution when submitted to re-saturation.

| ABSTRACT This study assessed the effect of different irrigation levels and plant densities on maize crops cultivated during the second season in the Western Border region of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. This work was conducted at the Federal Institute of Farroupilha - Alegrete Campus/RS - between January and June 2014. Treatments were arranged in a completely randomized 5 × 4 factorial design, with 3 replicates each. Irrigation of fixed amounts of water that were based on the evapotranspiration of the culture (Etc): 0, 50, 75, 100, and 125% of Etc were applied at 5-day intervals. Four densities of plants were defined (4, 7, 10, and 13 plants m-2). We assessed number of maize ears per plant, number of grains per ear, aboveground dry matter, mass of 100 grains, harvest index, and grain productivity. The number of grains per ear, mass of 100 grains, and grain yield were influenced by irrigation levels. Plant density and water depth influenced the number of grains per ear, the mass of 100 grains, and grain productivity. The highest yield of winter maize grain was achieved with a combination of 13 plants per m-2 and an irrigation level of 100% of Etc. Specific densities of plants maximized the yield of maize at each irrigation level, demonstrating that choice of plant density is a critical variable in the second crop of maize, and significantly influences the components of production.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different irrigation depths applied by drip system and nitrogen fertilization levels that promote higher yield and water use efficiency in onion (Allium cepa L.). The treatments consisted of five irrigation depths (50; 75; 100; 125; 150% of crop evapotranspiration), applied by drip system, combined with five nitrogen fertilization rates (0, 40, 80, 120 and 160 kg ha−1), in a 5 x 5 factorial scheme, in a randomized block experimental design, with four replicates. Irrigation depths estimated at 120.2% and 77.81% of crop evapotranspiration promoted higher yield and water use efficiency for total yield of onion bulbs, respectively. Nitrogen dose of 160 kg ha−1 promoted maximum total yield and water use efficiency.

ABSTRACT Vegetables intercropping of results in a better use of natural resources, water, light, and nutrients, when properly managed. The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of lettuce and radish in single crop and intercropping systems under different irrigation water depths. The experiment was conducted in a protected environment at the State University of Maringá, in Maringá, Paraná, Brazil. A randomized block experimental design was used in a 4×2 factorial arrangement, with four replications. The first factor consisted of four irrigation water depths (60%, 80%, 100%, and 120% ETc), and the second factor consisted of two crop systems (single crop and intercrop). A drip irrigation system was used, consisting of constant water table lysimeters. The variables evaluated were: shoot fresh weight, root dry weight, and leaf area for the lettuce crop; total fresh weight, root fresh weight, and root diameter for the radish crop; and yield, water use efficiency, and land use efficiency index for both crops. Shoot fresh weight, leaf area, and yield of lettuce, and total fresh weight, root fresh weight, and yield of radish increased as the irrigation water depth applied was increased. Total fresh weight, root fresh weight, root diameter, and yield of the radish crop were higher in the intercropping system. The water use efficiency of both crops was higher in the single crop, and the land use efficiency index was higher in the intercropping system.
