In general, water in developing countries is used for agriculture, which can be practiced through horizontal expansion, that is, increasing the cultivated area, or vertical expansion, which consists of increasing the yield per unit area or the intensity of the harvest, that is, the number of harvests per year. The African continent has abundant natural resources. It has sufficient water, land and manpower, but requires better management to achieve agricultural development, both horizontally and vertically. This paper presents the overall conditions in Africa, which for this purpose has been divided into four zones: East, West, North and South, and makes some recommendations to improve water management, comparing it with Colombian circumstances. | Por lo general, el agua en los países en desarrollo se utiliza para la agricultura, la cual se puede practicar mediante la expansión horizontal, es decir, aumentando el área cultivada, y la expansión vertical, consistente en aumentar el rendimiento por unidad de área o la intensidad de la cosecha, esto es, el número de cosechas por año. El continente africano no carece de recursos naturales. Cuenta con suficiente agua, suficiente tierra y suficiente mano de obra, pero requiere de un mejor manejo para lograr el desarrollo agrícola, tanto en forma horizontal como vertical. En este artículo se presentan las condiciones generales de África, que para el efecto se ha dividido en cuatro zonas Oriental, Occidental, Norte y Sur, y se hacen unas recomendaciones para mejorar su manejo hídrico, al tiempo que se compara con las circunstancias colombianas.
