An economic study of the agriculture of the Waipa County Full text
1928
Smallfield, P. W.
New Zealand possesses a very meagre agriculture literature, and the research worker in many branches of applied agricultural science frequently finds difficulty in obtaining a proper perspective of the various management methods required for different types of farming. This lack of farm management studies of New Zealand farming is certainly a hindrance to research work in agricultural economics and has prompted the writer to attempt to supply some information on this important subject by studying the organisation of the farming industry of an Auckland County. This economic study of the agriculture of Waipa County has been undertaken more with the view of investigating the organisation of the farming industry than of attacking any special problem. The financial and economic analysis of a group of dairy farms, has, however, been carried sufficiently far to allow of the examination of some of the economic problems of the dairy industry. The main objects of the following thesis are:- (1) To trace the growth of the agriculture of Waipa County from 1840-1927 to serve as a general economic background to the study of the modern organisation of farming. (2) To describe in detail the organisation, management and co-ordination of the various farming enterprises in Waipa County and to discuss the causes responsible for their adoption. (3) To analyse the economic and financial position of a group of dairy farms and to examine some of the economic problems presented. The writer hopes that the following work will, by placing on record current agricultural practice, help in their research the economist and historian of the future.

1928
This collection contains personal and official correspondence to and from poultry leaders covering the period 1928 to 1973. There is also information on the life and work of Dr. Warren, from his birth in 1890 to his death in 1994. An autobiography written in 1975 and a brief history of his forefathers, traced to North Carolina in 1786, is a part of the collection. Copies of newspaper articles concerning Warren's contributions to the poultry industry, certificates and awards given him during his career, his induction into the Poultry Hall of Fame in 1971, and many photographs of him at work and with colleagues and friends are included. Four bound volumes, covering the years 1917 through 1966, contain reprints of 88 scientific papers, mostly on genetics, published by Dr. Warren during that 49 year period. Research notes, sketches and the final draft of work completed on Drosophila melanogaste in 1918, are of interest. Copies of many speeches the donor made around the world, together with pencilled annotations, show his wide field of interest in genetics. Also included is an audiotape recording of induction speeches for the honorees when Warren and four other industry leaders were inducted into the Poultry Hall of Fame in a 1971 ceremony at the National Agricultural Library. A seven inch reel of 6 mm. motion picture film entitled "Forming an Egg", one of Warren's areas of expertise, rounds out this collection.

Gómez-Clemente, Federico

1928
Klages, K.H.
Two years' data are presented on the comparative yields of individual rows of five-row plats of sorghums in variety tests in an endeavor to find to what degree yields of adjacent varieties are influenced by competition and to find whether or not border rows are essential to the accuracy of variety tests under conditions prevailing at the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station. The yields of individual rows did not differ significantly from the average yields of the inside rows protected from intervarietal competition or from the average yields of all five rows of the plats. Neither the yields of single rows nor those of combinations of rows showed significant differences. The outside rows of plats in the variety tests exhibited a somewhat higher degree of variability than did inside rows. Combinations of rows show a slightly lower degree of variability than single rows, as would be expected. The differences in the values of the standard deviations of the respective rows or combination of rows were not consistent. In the greater number of cases, they were not of sufficient magnitude to be significant. There was a tendency towards a higher degree of variability in the yields of respective rows in the earliest and latest dates of planting. Such greater variations may be expected as varieties are planted at times removed from their respective optimum dates of planting. The individual yields of the two outside rows of plats in variety tests and the yields of an inside rows show a high degree of correlation. The values of the coefficients of correlation in no case differed significantly for the same set of outside rows when correlated with the yields of the respective inside rows of plats. This shows that the two respective outside rows of the plats were influenced either in like manner or not at all by rows of adjacent plats. A marked degree of competition was found in spacing tests. The yields of rows of dense stands profit at the expense of yields of adjacent rows of thinner stands. The degree of competition is affected by environmental conditions. All data presented lead to the conclusion that single-row plats replicated frequently enough will give as reliable results as will plats with a larger number of rows repeated less frequently. In the utilization of single-row plats care must be exercised in the selection of varieties to grow next to each other. Extreme differences in growing habits must be avoided. Results of the spacing tests serve to emphasize the importance of uniformity of stands to the accuracy of variety tests.
