Life, service, and the cost of service on farm machines on 400 Iowa farms
1942
Davidson, J. Brownlee (Jay Brownlee) | Henderson, S. M. (Silas Milton)
"That farmers of Iowa make an extensive use of farm machines is indicated by the 16th Census of the United States which gives the value of farm implements and machinery on Iowa farms, April 1, 1940 as $12,047.158. This is about one-twelfth of the total for the United States and represents an investment of #1,134 for each Iowa farm. Under these circumstances it is recognized that the use of farm machines occupies an important role in the agricultural practices of the state. Farm machines not only give the farm workers control over large units of power, thus making possible large individual productivity capacity, but they also make farm machine service or use as discussed in this bulletin should be of general interest."--Page [382].

Weiss, Martin G.
"The vegetable soybean is anew crop in American agriculture. Most of the types of soybeans introduced into the United States from the Orient until recently, were of value primarily for the feeding of livestock and the production of oil. About 10 years ago, while on a plant exploration trip in eastern Asia, W.J. Morse, of the United States Department of Agriculture. made an extensive collection of soybean varieties. Among these were a considerable number of vegetable type, grown for many years as a vegetable crop in Japan and Chosen, but new to the American farmer. During the past few years, these varieties have been subjected to experimental trials and to limited commercial production. As a result of such trials, the vegetable soybean has been found distinctly superior to the field soybean for human consumption. The high nutritive value of soybeans make them especially beneficial in the human diet. Many of these vegetable soybean varieties have been tested at the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station. By means of field experiments, varieties desirable from a production standpoint were selected. In the Experimental Cookery Laboratory of the Foods and Nutrition Subsection these varieties were rated as to their desirability as a food when used in the green-bean stage."--Page [383].
