ADDRESSING THE MORAL CONUNDRUM: INTEGRATING INFORMAL E-WASTE WORKERS INTO SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
2025
George, Naibin | Cekuls, Andrejs
The rapid surge in electronic devices has led to an exponential rise in electronic waste (e-waste), necessitating a robust strategy for its management. The Green Deal, within its overarching vision for sustainability, champions a circular economy and advocates for eco-friendly practices, encompassing e-waste management. In India, where the informal sector dominates e-waste handling, outdated methods and lack of regulation pose environmental and health hazards. This article examines the dichotomy between informal and formal e-waste management, exploring challenges faced by both sectors and proposing a cradle-to-cradle (C2C) model for sustainable collaboration. The aim of the research is to transform e-waste from a problem into an opportunity, envisioning a sustainable future in e-waste management. The research method involves the use of a rigorous approach using critical analysis and a comprehensive literature review to clarify the complexities in the field of electronic waste (e-waste) management. The synthesis of studies, from assessing enablers of e-waste management to evaluating circular economy models, provides valuable insights for stakeholders and policymakers. The study scrutinizes the existing infrastructure, discusses challenges, and proposes a strategic model bridging formal-informal e-waste management.

2017
Kļava, Dace | Straumīte, Evita | Krūma, Zanda | Guiné, Raquel
The positive benefits of dietary fibre (DF) include regulation of the intestinal transit, prevention of risk or treatment of diabetes, and prevention of cardiovascular diseases, colon cancer, and obe- sity. The aim of this study was to collect information on knowledge about dietary fibre of citizens of Latvia. The questionnaire consisted of 22 questions. Its aim was to evaluate knowledge in three distinct areas: six concerning knowledge about food fibres; six — about the relation be- tween fibres and various foods, and ten about the relation between fibres and diseases. The methodological study was conducted involving 231 participants, of which 83.5% were female and 16.5% male, aged between 18 and 80 years. The respondents were selected by convenience, and they differed in age, literacy, gender, geographical area of residence, and included people from different cities and smaller villages. 67% of the respondents considered that consumption of sufficient amounts of fibres can prevent or treat different diseases. 85% of respondents noted that legumes (peas, beans) are a source of fibres, but that it was more possible to take up the fibre with a combination of vegetables and animal products. The questionnaire revealed that respon- dents are aware of the benefits of fibre consumption for promoting health and treating some dis- eases. | info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

The aim of the present study was to determine the distribution and prevalence of S. tipuliformis in Latvia. In 2008-2009, trials were carried out in blackcurrant plantations aimed at establishing the distribution of S. tipuliformis across the territory of Latvia. To achieve this goal, 13 blackcurrant plantations were surveyed in 2008. The research was continued in three plantations in 2009. To assess of prevalence and level of damage caused by the S. tipuliformis, two methods were used: cutting of branches (five branches were cut from each bush) and pheromone traps with dispensers (distributed in each trial farm with density one trap per ha). The presence of S. tipuliformis was recorded in all 13 horticultural farms surveyed in 2008. Analyses of the branch samples demonstrated that the pest invaded from 3% to 70% of the branches. A total of 2.5 to 35 adults were caught per pheromone trap. The highest proportion of the branches invaded by the S. tipuliformis was in 2008 (70%) and the highest number of males in traps in 2009 was recorded in Jelgava municipality. S. tipuliformis is widely found in blackcurrant growing plantations across the whole territory of Latvia.

Short history of scale insect (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) research in Latvia with notes on historical records of Parthenolecanium pomeranicum (Kawecki, 1954) and species described by Biruta Rasiņa
2014
Although yew scale insects Parthenolecanium pomeranicum (Kawecki, 1954) have been known in the fauna of Latvia for more than 35 years already, this species has been recently reported as the first record for Estonia and Latvia. Historically, P. pomeranicum was first recorded in Latvia in 1972 by Amands Rupais. As there are no reasons for not trusting Rupais, this article presents a comprehensive bibliographical list of P. pomeranicum in the fauna of Latvia. To date, P. pomeranicum is confirmed for Latvia from two sites – Salaspils and Saulkrasti. Other literature data on P. pomeranicum in Latvia are general, without exact information on its distribution. Additionally, the history of scale insect research in Latvia is reviewed and the destiny of scale insect material including the species described by Biruta Rasiņa is discussed.
