Show more [+] Less [-]Effectiveness of behavioral and psychodynamic in-patient treatment of severe obesity--first results from a randomized study

OBJECTIVE: To compare treatment effectiveness of psychodynamic and behavioral in-patient treatment of patients with severe obesity. DESIGN: Randomized longitudinal study of obese patients (BMI greater than or equal to 35 kg/m2) randomly assigned to behavioral or to psychodynamic psychosomatic rehabilitation. SUBJECTS: Ninety eight, mostly female (88%), obese patients (age 20-64 y, BMI 36-74 kg/m2). MEASUREMENTS: Standardized self-report scales on distress (SCL-90R), eating behavior (FEV), interpersonal problems (IIP), body image (FKB-20), life satisfaction (IRES). RESULTS: During the 6 weeks of in-patient treatment patients lost an average of 5.4 kg (4.3%) in the behavioral (n=46) and 6.2 kg (4.7%) in the psychodynamic setting (n=52). In both settings, a significant improvement was also found for eating behavior, well-being, body image and life satisfaction. Weight reduction was more pronounced for those with a higher weight at onset, more distress in public at admission, and a longer treatment. CONCLUSION: Despite considerable differences in the behavioral vs psychodynamic treatment settings, both were equally effective. However, some common treatment elements were perceived differently by patients in the two settings. Analysis of the follow-up data will hopefully provide evidence as to which patients benefit more from which approach.

Project evaluation of the development of highlanders' life quality and environment within the Mae-Jan and Mae-Salong watershed areas, Northern Thailand

This study was a result of Project evaluation of the Development of Highlanders' Life Quality and Environment within the Mae-Jan and Mae-Salong Watershed Areas, Northern Thailand. The evaluation results were as follows, 1. The foundation was being restructuring its administrative system, adjusting to the changing economic and social situations, and its field work strategy. All members were found satisfied with such restructuring with full cooperation. 2. The project inputs were found as appropriate and effective at a satisfactory level. 3. The current development process of the project was sound appropriate and effective, considering the community's social, cultural and geographical contexts. The process was conducted on the principles of participation, respects of tribal culture and dignity, community education, promotion of learning and adjustment, and team work and networking development. 4. The results of the project and its activities were rather successful in line with its main objectives as planned. 5. The evaluation team could transform a series of lessons learnt from the foundation's highland development project and activities into 3 main issues. Those were, (1) the life quality development, illustrating changes in mother and child life quality, and situational changes relating to the community's folkways and highland environment, (2) development should be conducted with an awareness of the community cultural values, local wisdom, and local community management, and (3) natural and ecological conservation should apply selectively the local wisdom in learning and transferring processes, developing thinking system and methods.

The fatty acid composition of milk from Lowland Black-and-White and Polish Red cows was determined for the period of pasture feeding. The total fatty acid profile was determined by gas chromatography with a 50 m long polar capillary CP Sil 88 column. The content of trans C18:1 acid was determined with the same column after separating first the fraction of trans monoenoic methyl esters by silver-ion thin-layer chromatography. The milk fat from Lowland Black-and-White cows was found to have significantly higher proportion of long-chain saturated fatty acids as compared with milk fat from Polish Red cows for the same feeding conditions. The proportion of monoenoic acids, including the isomers of trans C18:1 acid and polyenoic acids, was significantly higher in milk fat from Polish Red cow than Lowland Black-and-White

In the paper are presented practical knowledges and experiences from quality parameters measuring methods of microirrigation technologies. Data and results of irrigation water distribution unifomity was obtained by using of microsprinkler type WATERBIRD III - AA. Testing methods and testing methodology was used according technical standards STN ISO 7749-1J, STN ISO 7749-2 and STN ISO 8026, where are strictly defined all technical test conditions and test methods, clasification classes, terminology etc. Basic result of measured parameters of above mentioned microsprinkler are presented. Evaluation and classification of microsprinkler in potential spacing was authors contribution to the application field of mentioned standards. Quality parameters for spacing using of microsprinklers are more usable than individual microsprinkler parameters as it is defined in STN ISO standards. There is not recommended application spacing more than 6 x 6 for measured and evaluated microsprinkler due to the fact of nonacceptable Cu value, which is less 78% for pressure 200 kPa or 75% for pressure 150 kPa
