Immunization of breeders and layers against egg drop syndrome 76(EDS 76) and Newcastle disease with an inactivated oil-adjuvant vaccine

It has been established under field conditions that the vaccination of laying hens against Newcastle disease was necessary before the laying period. The advantages of the inactivated vaccine in oily adjuvant for this purpose have been demonstrated for many years. In 1976, laying hens in Europe were struck by a new disease which induced drop in egg production. The causative agent of this disease, called EDS 76, is an adenovirus. A specific inactivated vaccine has been developed and combined with the Newcastle disease vaccine. The new bivalent vaccine was tested for its potency by serological methods (HI test) and by specific challenge against Newcastle disease and EDS 76. Persistent immunity was observed throughout the entire laying period
