The present status of pests on oil palm estates in South East Asia
1982
Wood, B.J.
The oil palm is attacked by numerous pests. Leaf eating caterpillars are usually controlled by natural enemies, but potentially devastating outbreaks occur from time to time. Chemical control is then necessary, but it must be by selective means. The trunk injection technique has proven useful. Disease transmission is showing promise. Application can pose difficulties, and support for a viable agricultural aviation industry is urged. Rhinoceros beetles damage is probably less serious than it looks. Control still emphasised breeding-site destruction, the ground vegetation barrier effect, and insecticidal protection. Intensive studies of rats have enabled measurment of live populations
