Cytogenetics of planthoppers (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) associated with rice (Oryza sativa L.) and weedgrass (Leersia hexandra Swartz) in the Philippines
1985
Barrion, A.A. | Saxena, R.C.
The cytology and cytogenetics of four planthopper population in the Philippines- the brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens Stal and the whitebacked planthopper Sogatella furcifera Horvath which are associated with rice Oryza sativa L. and N. bakeri and another population of N. lugens that coexist sympatrically on a common weed grass Leersia hexandra Swartz - were determined. Both qualitative and quantitative criteria such as gametic meioses, meiotic index, chromosome number and sex-determining mechanism, chromosome morphology and behavior during the different stages of meiosis, chromosome aberrations, chromosome volumes and other cellular and chromosomal morphometrics were described and compared among the planthopper populations. Knowledge of karyotypic and karyological features advances planthopper systematics from alpha level to beta taxonomy and elucidation of the possible evolutionary relationships
