The influence of gamma rays on some characters of spring barley

This paper presents the results of investigating the effects of the treatment of some varieties of spring barley with gamma-rays. Varieties of spring barley belonging to nutans (Union and Proctor) and pallidum (Beecher) varieties were treated. The seed was treated with gamma-rays dosed 2,500, 5,000, 7,000, 10,000, 15,000 and 20,000 r. The length of M1 generation plants of the two-rowed variety Union alternates successively with the increase of the radiation dose by 1.05 cm (5.000 r) up to 11.05 cm (20,000 r). In M2 generation, compared with the control, the length of plants increased with all radiation doses from 2.35 to 6.55 cm. In the two-rowed Proctor variety there is a justifiable decrease of the length of plants of M1 generation with the dose of 20,000 r and of M2 generation with the doses of 15,000 and 20,000 r. The length of the many-rowed M1 Beecher plants decreases successively with the increased radiation dose by 2.45 up to 21.10 cm. In M2 the length of plants decreases with all doses and the most notable decrease is with the 15,000 and 20,000 r doses. The length of ears in M1 and M2 generations varies largely with different doses. There is no accordance between the length of the ear and the radiation dose. The most significant average shortening of the productive stalks in M1 generation of all 3 tested varieties was with the 20.000 r dose. With the increase of the radiation dose from 2.500 r up, the average number of sterile flowers per ear increases successively in all 3 treated varieties. There were 8 different chlopophyll mutations in M2 Union and Beecher and 6 in Proctor variety.
