Effect of soil moisture stress on the availability and uptake of N, P and K by wheat plants and growth, yield and quality of wheat [in Bangladesh]

Soil moisture stresses ranging from field capacity (F.C.) to wilting coefficient (W.C) were imposed in repeated cycles or at different growth stages to study its effect on the availability and uptake of N, P and K by wheat plants and growth, yield and quality of wheat (Jupateco variety) under fertilized and unfertilized conditions. Stress imposed beyond F.C.....1/2 F.C. produced decrease in N and P availability and their uptake by wheat plants. However, K availability and uptake was little affected by moisture stress. Wheat plants grew well and produced better yield at moisture levels F.C. and F.C.....1/2 F.C. compared to other stresses. The quality of grain was also affected similarly. Moisture stresses of F.C. and F.C. 1/2 F.C. gave similar and better results compared to other stresses. Moisture stresses of 1/2 F.C..... W.C. and 1/3 F.C..... W.C. resulted harmful effects. Stress imposed at tillering, flowering and harvesting stages resulted moderate effects in Bangladesh.
