Influence of chemical weed control, tillage and non tillage on growth and production of non-irrigated olive orchards

In experiments conducted in the regions Drapania and Dromonero of Chania (Greece) during the period 1968-73, the influence of chemical weed control, tillage and non-tillage treatments on the production and vegetation of non-irrigated olive orchards was studied. From these experiments was found that the size of olive fruits and their oil content did not differ among chemical weed control, tillage and non-tillage treatments. The annual growth and the total number of olive fruits per tree, although not significantly different between non-tillage and tillage, were significantly different between certain herbicides and non-tillage. The total weight of olive crop and olive oil per tree were significantly lower in the non-tillage treatment that in the tillage and chemical weed control whereas the same parameters did not differ significantly in the two later treatments. Of all the tested herbicides, the phytoxicity in olive trees were as followed: severe with A-3382, moderate with Caragard-3587 and light with Campaprim 1544 at conditions of light soils and high rainfalls
