Wheat production in the Jezera area of Northern Iraq depends on rainfall. Amounts and time distribution are often inadequate to supply plant water requirements and supplementary irrigation may be a feasible alternative to increase and stabilize production. A simulation model is developed for predicting soil moisture status from paint, soil and meteorological information. The model consists of four moisture storage reservoirs and processes such as infiltration and evapotranspiration for transferring water into or out of reservoirs. The basic output of the model is the daily soil moisture status which may be used in conjunction with a supplementary irrigation subsystem to supply information that is essential in the optimum design and operation of supplementary irrigation projects
