Trace elements in relation to P [phosphorus] and lime and their influence on plant growth in pots and in the field

A study to observe the interactions between P, pH and Zn and their influence on plant growth was conducted using four soils, namely Prang, Jabil, Holyrood and Bungor series. Results showed that adsorption of Zn was greatly influenced and enhanced by the addition of P and positively correlated to soil pH. In pot trials using sorghum as a test crop, additions of P and lime increased dry matter yield. Higher application of lime decreased dry matter yields of sorghum on Jabil and Bungor series soils. The addition of Zn at the highest P and lime applications doubled the dry matter yields in all soils. In field experiment on Bungor soil, using Setaria splendida as a test crop, addition of Zn did not influence dry matter yield. Zn content of the grass was affected by P treatments, but not by lime applications. Liming reduced Mn and Fe contents of the grass
