A comparison of the fruit quality of tomatoes grown in soil and in a nutrient solution (NFT)
1985
Baevre, O.A. (Kvithamar Agricultural Research Station, Stjoerdal (Norway))
The composition and taste of tomatoes grown in soil and NFT have been compared in a three year experiment. The content of total dry matter, total sugar and reducing sugar were higher in tomato fruits grown i NFT than in soil, but the differences were not always significant. There was no consistent difference in titrable acidity. A sensory panel found a significant difference in taste on only one out of six samplings, with a preferance for NFT-grown tomatoes. The salt concentration in the root zone had a marked effect on fruit composition. It is likely that other factors than the substrate have a great effect on fruit composition and quality
