Topping at button stage gave the highest yield of 3.4 t/ha. Yield was reduced in plants topped at 15 leaves, button stage but undersuckered, and untopped plants. Crop value was also highest (P21,421-P21,034) when plants were topped at button to early flower stages. Lowest crop value was obtained from untopped plants and those topped at 15 leaf stage. Chemical analysis of leaves from the different topping stages showed that topping increased the nicotine content at all leaf positions. The earlier the topping stage, the higher the nicotine content. The formation of flowers and non-removal of suckers reduced nicotine content of leaves. However, the reducing sugar and its ratio to nicotine was not affected
