In model experiments of Wistar rats the effects of moderate magnesium deficiency on the utilization of dietary protein were studied. The diet contained 5%, 10% and 20% of protein as casein and differed in their magnesium content. Magnesium deficiency had no effect on the apparent digestibility of casein but decreased the values of the NPU, NPR and PER coefficients at protein levels 10% and 20% in the diet. The unfavourable effect of magnesium deficiency was greater when the content of protein in the diet was higher
