Coliform counts of 5 drinking water, 5 washing water and 10 different food samples from open stalls of a fair at Teknaf,Bangladesh on 17.4.85 were carried out. All samples were enriched in G.N. broth and Bile Peptone broth and subsequently streaked on the Mac Conkey's SS and TTG Agar media for the isolation of Shigella, Salmonella and Vibrio. It was found that coliform counts varied from 3.0x10(3) to 1.0x10(6) in drinking water, 5.0x10(5) to 5.0x10(7) in washing water and 3.0x10(3) to 5.0x10(7) in food items. Shigella, Salmonella and Vibrio spp failed to appear but other enteric bacteria i.e. Escherichia coli, Klebsieila, Enterobacter, Proteus, Pleisomonas and Pseudomonas sp were isolated.
