Response of two varieties of soybean to inoculation with different rhizobium inoculants [in Bangladesh]

A field experiment was conducted in Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm during 'rabi' season of 1984 with six soybean inoculants of which three were prepared with locally isolated strains BAU 101, BAU 107 and BAU 118, and three with NifTAL strains TAL 102, TAL 377 and TAL 379. Two varieties of soybean, Bragg and Pb 1 were used in the study. The Rhizobium inoculant BAU 118 appeared to be the best for Pb 1 soybean with respect to nodulation and dry matter production observed after both 55 and 95 days of sowing. However, all the inoculants behaved in identical manner to produce number of pods and seeds per plant, 100 seed weight and grain yield in both the varieties. The highest grain yield of Pb 1 soybean was 1492 kg/ha (165% increase over uninoculated control) obtained with TAL 120 while the highest grain yield of 1150 kg/ha (56% increase over uninoculated control) of Bragg soybean was recorded due to inoculant BAU 118.
