Studies on the mitotic chromosomes in root tip cells and meiotic chromosomes in pollen mother cells indicate that Commelina capitata has 2n=52 chromosomes. The length of somatic chromosomes ranged from 2.74/0.06 to 5.92/0.10um with a centromeric formula of 3M+40M+9sm. The majority of homologous pairs formed bivalents with a mean chiasma frequency of 1.75/0.03. The karyotype and the fact that meiotic chromosomes are present mostly as bivalents at diakinesis and MI suggest the allopolyploid nature of this species in Bangladesh.
