Winter forage crops in double cropping systems in the humid areas of North-western Spain (Galicia)
1986

The winter forage crops, oats (Avena strigosa Schreb) + vetch (Vicia villosa Roth), rye (Secale cereale L), forage rape (Brassica napus L) and Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam), used or of possible use in the traditional Galician (Northwestern Spain) double cropping systems, based on corn, were evaluated in three locations (Arzua, Mabegondo and Puebla de Brollon) during three years (1980-83). The average production was 4-5 t/ha, but on 1982 oats with vetch yielded 10.2 t/ha in Arzua and forage rape 8.6 t/ha in P. de Brollon. Forage rape and Italian ryegrass always gave the highest digestibility values while oats with vetch had the highest levels of crude protein. None of the evaluated crops was the best in all three locations at the same time, but oats and rye, traditional plants in several areas of Galicia, showed to have stable yields throughout the years
