Moisture stress induced by flooding the rooting medium of wheat seedlings CV.WL711 and WL 410 with solutions of Polyethylene Glycol 6000 caused decrease in water potential (psi w), osmotic potential (psi s) and turgor potential (psi p) of wheat leaf. Cv. WL711 maintained about 10% higher psi w than Cv. WL410 at equivalent induced moisture stress. Foliar application of abscisic acid (10 ppm), and ascorbic acid (0.05%), protected psi p at low psi w. Accumulation of proline and decrease in endogenous ascorbic acid content was noticed under moisture stress. Foliar spray of ABA also increased proline content under non-stress conditions. The effect of ABA and moisture stress on proline accumulation appears through its effect on redox potential
