The studies revealed that the effective soil depth, gravel content and texture of surface soils (0-20 cm) ranged between 0.52 and 1.25 m, 11 and 28% and clay loam-clay, respectively. The moisture content at field capacity and permanent wilting point varied between 27.15 and 30.30; and 16.16 and 18.10%, respectively with available water range of 158 to 199 mm/m of soil depth. The infiltration rate was moderately rapid (4.42 to 10.98 cm/hr). Soils were moderately acidic (pH 5.5 to 6.0), rich in total nitrogen (0.088 to 0.183%), medium in available nitrogen (301.3 to 423.8 kg/ha) and available K2O (168.0 to 324.8 kg/ha)
