Comparative evaluation of drugs for chemoprophylaxis and chemotherapy of anaplasmosis
1986
Sharma, S.P. (Indian Veterinary Research Inst., Izatnagar. Div. of Parasitology)
The prophylactic and therapeutic efficacy of long acting oxytetracycline (Terramycin LA), diminazene aceturate (Berenil) and mepacrine methanesulphonate (Avlon) was determined in bovine calves experimentally infected with Anaplasma marginale. Observations were made on clinical signs, parasitaemias, haematological changes and antibody titres as measured by indirect fluorescent antibody test. Of these drugs, only oxytetracycline proved effective in reducing the severity of the disease on administration during the prepatent period. In therapeutic trials, long acting oxytetracycline was found comparatively more efficacious than diminazene aceturate, while mepacrine methanesulphonate gave very little indication of any therapeutic value against anaplasmosis
