In 1984 and 1985 the citurs industry began to show a slight increase in production after a steady decline over the past 15 years. A Citrus Rehabilitation Programme aims to rehabilitate 2,700 ha of plantings and establish a further 1400 ha. Phytosanitary measures recommended by the programme for the control of important citrus diseases Greasy Spot (Mycosphaerella citri), Melanose (Diaporthe citri), Areolate Leaf Spot (Corticium areolatum), Sour Orange Scab (Elsinoe fawcetti), Wither Tip (Colletotrichum sp.) and Gummosis (Phytophthora sp.) are given. A programme for certification of virus-free citrus budwood is planned. The two most important diseases of plantains and bananas in Trinidad and Tobago are Moko disease (Pseudomanas solanacearum Race 2) and Yellow Sigatoka (Mycosphaerella musicola) and phytosanitary measures are recommended for their control.
