In an attempt to increase beef production from cattle and buffalo, particular attention were given to the selection of important traits which affect the productive efficiency of the cow-calf phase and the fattening phase in beef production systems. Traits to be emphasized were maternal in the cow-calf phase and growth in the fattening phase. Selection criteria for females should concentrate on low maintenance cost, high fertility, moderate milk production, long productive life and adaptability to existing environment. For males, the selection criteria were fast and efficient growth and high lean production. Also the input: output ratio were examined to determine the efficiency of a chosen production systems
