Vegetable production - prospects and problems [in Malaysia]

Presently the production of vegetables in Malaysia was insufficient to meet national requirements. Information on status of vegetable cultivation, consumption pattern, market potential imports and exports as well as the various prospects of vegetable cultivation was presented in this paper. Vegetable cultivation was a risky business, beset with a host of problems. These include problems of pests and diseases, lack of improved varieties and good quality planting materials, labour shortage, land tenure, poor crop management practices, lack of finance, marketing and poor postharvest handling. Research was being conducted to reduce the problems. Under the National Agricultural Policy, emphasis was being placed on vegetables especially commercial vegetable cultivation so that the development of the vegetable industry can be accelerated to meet national requirements and exports
