The ecology and ethnobotany of the wild yams (Dioscorea spp.) in some upland areas in the Philippines
1986
Ruscol, M.V.T.
Nine species of Dioscorea were collected, namely: Dioscorea hispida, Dioscorea bulbifera, Dioscorea esculenta, Dioscorea pentaphylla, Dioscorea luzonensis, Dioscorea divaricata, Dioscorea filiformis, Dioscorea nummularia, Dioscorea laurifolia. In Puting Lupa and Ipil-Baybay, where alternative food sources are more easily available and/or accessible, high population density of yams [100 yams/ha] were observed. In Umabang, where the local mangyan population rely solely on forest products (like Dioscorea spp.) during the food-deficient months, population density of yams was low. On the other hand, the deteriorating environmental conditions at the National Botanic Garden have greatly reduced the population of wild yams in the area
