Effect of pre-sowing 'hydration-dehydration' on germination, vegetative growth and fruit yield of Abelmoschus esculentus grown under two soil mositure regimes

Abelmoschus esculentus (Hibiscus esculentus) seeds were hardened by imbibing for 24hr then air-drying for 18hr to 50 % of moisture content. Germination was higher in hardened seeds. Hardening significantly (P 0.01) increased the leaf relative water content and vegetative growth under both normal irrigation and water stress (intermittent watering) but did not offset the detrimental effect of water stress. Hardening significantly increased fruit yield under both watering regimes
