Group field packing among banana farmers
1986
Baron, O. (Dominica Banana Marketing Corporation, Roseau (Dominica))
Field packing, the direct transfer of fruit from plant to carton in the field, involves dehanding, latex control, fungicide application to the crown and boxing. Small farmers are encouraged to form groups to carry out this activity. A study of 30 such groups in Dominica shows that it is a family enterprise which attains an average quality rating of 74 % (70 % is considered satisfactory by Geest). The major quality control problems were bruises, latex stains, scars and scratches. Weaker groups showed lack of participation and cooperation. These problems could be improved by clinical workshops on fruit quality and training in group dynamics
