The soils of Antigua
1984
Ahmad, N. (West Indies Univ., St. Augustine (Trinidad and Tobago). Dept. of Soil Science)
The soils are classified by the Soil Taxonomy system and placed into 7 land capability classes according to the USDA system. No class I or II (very good or good) land is identified. The particular limiting factors for agriculture within the capability classes are low rainfall, shallow profile, stoniness, high calcium carbonate content and steep slope resulting in high erosion. Current land use is briefly described. Soil fertility properties were analysed and all soils are neutral to alkaline with high cation exchange capacities. Physical structure is poor due to predominance of clays and montmorillonite minerology which leads to high energy requirements for tillage. Suitable crops for the various soil types are recommended
