Seven spring bread wheat varieties of varied height have been diallelly crossed. Mean squares for both the general and specific combining ability have been significant for plant height property and its components. However, predominant genetic control both for the height and its components (except for spike length) has been noticed. Relative rankings of parents, based on "per se" measurements were closely associated with general combining abilities for all properties, except for the number of internodes per stem. Effects of general combining abilities were more stable than those of specific combining abilities under various environmental conditions. Reduction of internode number did not seem to be the main factor of plant height.
