The total available carbohydrate in leaves of summer sown soyabean plants varied with developmental stages. Pod number was significantly correlated to total N accumulation in the leaves, which was decreasing with the seed development. There was a marked correlation between seed yield and N accumulation in the leaves at flowering-filling (r=0.674-0.813). N application at the beginning of flowering had a significant increasing effect on the total N and carbohydrate accumulation which consequently resulted in a higher yield. Early reduction of total N in the leaves suggested that N was a crucial factor respons1165ible for the seed yi
