An accumulation of Na in the shoot showed negative correlation with plant survival in 9 varieties of rice (Oryza sativa Linn.). Chlorophyll was used as an indicator of metabolic status and the relationship between shoot Na and the reduction in the chlorophyll concentration of the third leaf showed that reduction in the leaf area was more with more concentration of ions. 'AU 1', 'CO 43' and 'CSC 1' were found resistant to salinity as they showed less Na and Cl uptake, and less reduction in chlorophyll, survival rate and total leaf area. The sodium chloride treatment increased the chlorophyll content up to 4 weeks in these varieties
