Heterosis for some quantitative characters in Indian rapeseed

In 6 strains of Indian rapeseed [Brassica rapa (Linn.) Thell. emend. Metzger var. napus Linn.; syn. B. napus Linn. var. napus Linn. sensu stricto; B. campestris Linn. var. toria Duth. and Full.] desirable heterosis over the mid-parent was more for all the characters except plant height and oil content. The outstanding hybrids were 'PT 8' x 'PT 600' for early flowering (-6.85%), 'Genepool' x 'PT 600' for short stature (-22.96%), 'PT 600' x 'Span' for primary branches/plant (121.45%), 'Genepool' x 'PET 1' for secondary branches/plant (66.13%), 'PET 1' x 'Span' for siliquae/plant (95.75%), 'Genepool' x 'PT 303' for seeds/siliquae (17.10%), 'PT 8' x 'PET 1' for 1,000-seed weight (17.10%), 'Genepool' x 'Span' for yield/plant (60.99%) and 'PET 1' x 'PT 600' for oil content (10.34%)
