A virus was mechanically isolated from naturally infected Clematis vitalba L. plants, a perennial wild species that grows in woody lands and uncultivated fields in the Mediterranean area. Infected plants showed yellow mosaic and vein yellowing symptoms. Certain experimentally infected hosts, particularly Chenopodium quinoa Willd., C. amaranticolor Coste et Reyn. and Nicotiana tabacum.L. reacted with symptoms similar to that of Tobacco streak virus (TSV). The properties, shape and size of the particles were also similar to those of TSV. Purified virus preparations showed three centrifugal components. The virus reacted in gel diffusion tests with an antiserum to a North American isolate of TSV
