A serological observation on Mareks disease in Sri Lanka
1984
Wickremasinghe, R. (Veterinary Research Inst., Peradeniya (Sri Lanka))
A serological survey was carried out to detect the presence of antibodies against Mareks disease (MD) among chickens in five poultry farms in Sri Lanka. Serum samples were collected at random from birds over 12 weeks of age and tested for the precipitating antibodies by the agar gel precipitation test. The precipitating antibodies were found to be present even among the clinically healthy chickens which had no previous exposure to the disease; this was observed in three out of the five farms. The incidence of precipating antibodies in these three farms was slightly lower than that in the other two farms where the birds had been previously exposed to the clinical disease. The presence of MD precipitating antibodies among chickens which have had no previous exposure to clinical MD suggests that avirulent or less virulent strains of MD virus may be prevalent among the chickens in Sri Lanka
