The distribution of total, organic and various forms of inorganic phosphorus was determined in four weekly weathered Inceptisols from the Kampe River Basin of Kwara State, using the fractionation procedure of Chang and Jackson. Total P content varied widely in the soils, ranging from 136 to 1496 mg/kg and decreasing with depth in all the profiles. Organic P ranged from 32 to 238 mg/kg and formed on the whole about 29% of total P. The relative distribution of various inorganic P forms was in the decreasing order of occluded P, active P and residual P, while the relative distribution of the active P forms followed the order Fe-PCa-PAl-P. The relatively high fraction of active P and the low proportion of residual P indicate high availability of the soil P and a low degree of weathering of the soils
