The chromosomes controlling the high protein content in the grains (expressed as % and mg/grain) and some bread making characteristics of winter wheat line F 26-70 were identified using the method of intervarietal chromosome substitution. The results obtained showed evidence of the major influence of chromosomes 4B, 4D, 5A, 5B, 5D and 6D on the high percentage of protein and of chromosomes 4B, 4D, 5B and 5D on the protein content expressed in mg/grain. The high protein percentage in the substitution lines 5A and 6D is probably due to a deficiency of carbohydrate accumulation in the grain. No decrease in yield was observed in the protein substitution lines. Correlation between earliness of heading and high1054protein content was limited to chromosomes (4B and 7B). A major positive influence on the bread making characteristics has been noticed for the chromosomes 6A and 7B. Our results revealed that Romanian winter wheat lines F 26-70 is a new source for high protein content quite different from winter wheat variety Atlas
