Performance of cropping pattern for meeting food fodder and firewood requirement under irrigated condition in Gopalpur medium highland [of Bangladesh]

Farmers, alternative cropping pattern, maize + Mungbean T. aman rice (MV)-wheat., was tested against farmers existing cropping pattern, B. aus rice (L) T. aman rice (MV)-wheat to compare its performance at Gopalpur medium high land of the Farming Systems Research Site, Kalikapur, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh in 1985-86. The alternative cropping pattern resulted in a 58% and 77% higher gross return and gross margin respectively with a marginal benefit cost ratio of 5.7. Maize yield was about three times (5.8 t/ha) that for broadcast aus rice and green fodder was available for cattle. The maize stems (12.8 t/ha) were used as fuel. Mungbean grain (0.42 t/ha) was used as pulse, by-products as feed and the stems as green manure by incorporation with soil.
