Combining ability for yield and its components in kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus)
1988
Khatun, R. (Bangladesh Jute Research Inst., Dhaka (Bangladesh). Breeding Div.)
Results of a 10 x 10 diallel cross in Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) showed that general and specific combining ability variances were significant for plant height, base diameter, green weight, stick weight and fibre yield per plant. The reciprocal differences were also significant. Additive gene action was predominant for plant height and base diameter and non-additive gene action was observed in green weight, stick weight and fibre yield per plant. The accession number 1986 was a good general combiner for base diameter, stick weight and fibre yield and the accession number 1585 was a good general combiner for stick weight and fibre yield. The crosses 1568 x 1629, 1568 x 1641, 1517 x 1986 and 1641 x 1644 showed significant s.c.a. effects for several traits and the crosses 1565 x 1571, 1565 x 1626, 1568 x 1653, 1644 x 1986 and 1653 x 1657 for fibre yield. Significant reciprocal s.c.a. effects were observed in crosses 16r1 x 1565, 1641 x 1629, 1644 x 1565, 1657 x 1641 and 1986 x 1556 for fibre yield.
