The root and shoot characters of ten rice varieties were studied under the aeroponic and hydroponic cultures analogous to upland and lowland conditions respectively. In both types of culture, the correlation and regression coefficients were homogeneous. Root diameter, xylem vessel number, xylem vessel area, root dry weight and plant height were positively correlated with drought resistance. Selection based on root characters for drought resistance could be done in the early stage of growth and in any type of culture. Positive association between root diameter with xylem vessel area and xylem vessel number showed that thick root can be useful and justified as selection index in breeding for drought resistance.
